rott farm, and the superintendent
could uscribe no reason for the sud
den cessation of fruiting several
year j ago. Dr. Parrott's interest was
aroused. He learned that a small
wild grape vine which grew in prox
imity to it had been removed.
Dr. Parrott's investigation result
ed in the discovery that the scupper
nong is a female only, and that the
suddenly barren vine required pollen,
izing from the fecundating dust of
the wild grape. A cutting of the
outcast was planted within the scup-
pernong vine and the result was as
tonishing. Unlike the bi-sexed corn
the stalk of which is male to, the ear
the hermaphrodite cotton and other
plants, the scuppernong has but one
sex and is incapable of producing
without the aid of another grape.
TICK ERADICATION IS
UNDERTAKING IN LENOIR
Dr. Foss of the bureau of animal
husbandry of the national Department
of Agriculture, here Monday evening
in the interest of the local cattle tic
eradication work, stated that 600
farms and other places in Lenoir
county are now under quarantine
Thousands of animals have been dip
ped, and many more will be similarly
treated in the coming three or four
months. It is probable that a num
bor of cattle will still be under quar
antine during the early part of 1915,
The government agents in charge
of the eradication work have, by pros
ecutions and other stringent method
of enforcing the quarantine, about
eliminated the danger of infection of
cattle in this county from animals al
lowed by their owners in the sur
rounding counties, which have no
quarantine, to stray across the line.
