Sylvester Sutton, a negro, is

authorities, is alleged to have shot

MATTHEW CARR DEAD.
Mr. Matthew II. Carr, .iged about '
36, died late Sunday at his farm,'
"Sunny Acres," near Grifton. An in-, j
jury suffered during childhood is be
lieved t ohave been the cause of his
demise. He was a member of a pro
minent Lenoir family, and was gen
erally known in Kinston, where he
spent much of his time. His wife
survives. The remains were brought
here on the A. C. L. train this after
noon for interment. The Knights of
Pythias, in which order he held mem
bership were represented at the fun
eral, which was held in Maplewood
cemetery.

Prof. D. Berns, a palmist fortune
teller, has been served with a war
rant by the police for securing money

Berns collected the advertised fee of

on West Caswell street to have her
palm "read," and upon hi3 discover
ing that the reading was unsatisfac
tory desired her to place another half
dollar upon a table, which she said he
stated was essential to the procedure. !

The State convention of the Uni
versalist church closed Sunday night
in the church of the Eternal Hope, at
McLeWc.tn and Lenoir streets, with
large audience hearing discussion
of Univertialisni by a number of mini
sters from the churches represented.
"The convention in 1915 will be held at
Bed Springs, in Sampson County.
I L. Matthews was re-elected presi
dent of the convention. Mr. Mat
thew, of Clinton, is auperintendent
of schools for Sampson county, and
one of the most representative lay
men of the denomination.
