George Stal lings ie going to need a few of his mkacles next season if he romps home with his second National League pennant. Jawn J. IkGxaw will have something to say where the Aug is going to float unlets the signs are wrong. McGraw awakened to the fact some weeka ago that hia Giant crew was woefully lacking in spots. So Jawn loaded up his purse and went to the market. He came back with one of ihe best, if not the best, third sacker in the old. league. J. llonus Lobert who has cavorted around the three- quarter stop for the Phillies since VJi 1. That hole in securely plugged, And in plugging the cavity, Jawn JL hIho got rid of some dead wood if not dead, then slightly pithy. This excess consisted of Al Deraaree prin cipally. Demaree had a excellent year in 1913 despite bad health. Mc- Graw picked his games for him and thf tall cartoonist came through with tjying colore. - Last season he fell down badly and Oothum fans hold his and Marquard's failure, reaMy eesponsible for the pennant going to Boston. Stock, the second man in the trado for Lobert, did his bewt to fill Til lie Schafer's shoes, but the re sult was anything but satisfactory to McGraw, Adams, a young cateher, goes to the Philadelphia club without a trial by McGraw. lie was snared in the draft at the cIohc of the 1914 season. The Giant infield before the depart ure of Schafer and Herzog was con sidered one of the bent in the business. Lobert, unless all the dope is wrong, Will nil Ilerzog's shoes admirably and a hole through which many games Iribbled away last season, will be plug ged. However, a great deal of the Giants' hopes lay with the hurlers, particu larly whether Mathcwson runs true to form. If he does, and Marquard's case ia settled in favor of the Giants, McGraw is going to present a formid able array of pitching strength, back ed up by Jen Tcsreau and several promising recruits. ' Y. ML C. A. FEELS ' EFFECTS OF THE ' WAR IN EUROPE CATARRH TROUBLE ENDED BY IIYOMEI An Inexpensive Easily Used Most Effective Remedy. and tor. Surely try llyomei, nature's harm less remedy for catarrh, colds, asth ma, bronchitis, or croup of children a treatment that ts pleasant to use, and ao certain of results that J. E Hood & Co. sell it on the "No-cure no-pay" plan. Ilyomcl is not a cure-all, but a spe cine for distressing catarrh and sim liar ailments. You breathe llyomei so that its antiseptic medication at once reaches the irritated and dis eased tissues, healing and soothing the sore spots. Get a llyomei outfit, which contains inhaler and bottle of liyuid, at once, Put twenty drops of llyomei into the inhaler and breathe it a few times du ring the day. There is no treatment so satisfying for it instantly opens the stopped-up air passages you breathe freely, the unclean discharges from the nose stop, and dull head acnes vanish even the worst cases respond quickly. adv New York, Jan. 18. The European war has touched the local people in an unusual quarter the Y. M. C. A In time of peace abroad, it is cus tomary for the secretaries of the or inini.ution to sind a great deal of time with the young men between 15 and 4f who come to this country. Normally, 82 per cent, of all the im migrants is between those ages. But the warring countries, of course, are not nermittinir able-bodied men to leave their country. Greece and Italy have followed in the lead of the oth ers and the percentage has been greatly cut down. Y. M. C. A. workers formerly met and became acquainted with .'1,000 im mi if rants a month at Ellis Island. That figure has decreased to 800. Peter Koberts, secretary for immi gration work of the international committee, has made some interest ing observations in connection with his labors among the foreigners. He hus noted, for example, the effect of the war upon the Poles in this coun try. He sees a hopeful sign in the fact that the Poles are inspired by the fight which their former country men abroad are putting up against the Germans and that the American Poles feel more confidence in them selves as a result. Commenting upon the often ex pressed fear of a tidal wuve of im migration after the war is over, Rob erts has this to say: "I see that in Washington they are dreading the flood of immigration that will arrive after the war. Well, I don't believe there is any flood com ing, although I believe a torrent of immigration then would be a good thing, as business will boom and there will not only be no unemployment, but also a demand for labor that will far exceed the supply." Kinston has never had a "boom," just a steady and healthy growth, from a country village, twenty years ago to a city today. Real estate val ues have grown accordingly and will continue to grow.
