LAYMEN OF BAPTIST CHURCH t j TO CONDUCT A SERVICE On Sunday morning at 11 o'clock a special rally service will be conduct ed in the First Baptist church under the auspices of the laymen of the con gregation. A full attendance of the membership la desired. Harold Bell Wright's most popular novel, "The Shepherd of the Hills," of which a milium coptee have been sold, has been made into a-play by its author with the assistance of Els bery W.' Reynolds, the first appear ance of which in this city will be at the Grand Theater, on the night of February I. Tho plav is practically a true nar rative of, , life ..among the humble dwellers of tho Osarks. It touches all tho emotions, and its influence is wholesome and helpful, notwith standing several rough characters that figure more or less prominently. The shepherd of th story is a cul tured stranger, who comes into tho hillls glad to escape from tho vani ties and conventionalities to which he a been accustomed. Among his ed lad who understands the voices of most .devoted followers are "Old Mart," tho giants of the hills; Sammy Lane, glorious in the beauty of young womanhood, and poor Pete, a derang ed lad who understands the voice of nature and sees what other cannot sea. ' There is a mystery of tho hills that often terrifies, but the solution is brought about by Pete, and the shepherd, and it ia. the latter who is most deeply concerned. It is hardly necessary to add that a pretty ro mance ia woven into the humor, path os and tragedy, for the production throughout is one of human interest with a conclusion that ia thoroughly satisfactory to "Young Matt" and the auditors. Tickets go on sale Satur day at 6 p. m. at the Grand refresh ment parlor. LAWYERS DID NOT DECIDE , UPON RECORDER'S COURT. Attorneys who met in the office of John G. Dawson, Esq Thursday night, did not come to a final agree ment regarding the proposed county court for which a bill to be present ed to the Legislature is now being gone over. It was decided to hold another meeting Saturday night and take final action in the matter, deter mining whether the court should have civil as well as criminal jurisdiction and the form of the bill to be sent to the General Assembly.
