That we extend a vote of thanks to these gentlemen in ap preciation of their unselfish interest in promoting the cause of equal suf frage and assure them that the wo men of North Carolina will always be proud to honor them. 2. That we record our belief that the bill was defeated because it was taken up suddenly -without sufficient notice to its friends and rushed to a vote without fair opportunity for dis E. Thit we deprecate the fact that any North Carolinian should have been influenced by prejudice against women or professional polities and should have voted that the women of North Carolina be deprived of their natural rights and for two years longer remain classed with the feeble-minded, the insane, criminals and aliens. ."'.- 4. That We regret that the Legis latures of the Southern States of Vest Virginia, Texas, Tennesee and Arkaiir.as have shown more sersa of justice than our own ' Legislature by their willingness to permit the wo men of the South to step into the op portunities and responsibilities ol full citizenship. 1 - - . . ; 6. THE CHRISTMAS TRUCE AS DESCRIBED BY AN OFFICER SINCE KILLED Captain Miles, Who Contributed An onymouBly From the Front, Was a Second Kipling Hard to Get Germans Back to Business . After' Armistice ;.:;r By P. M. Sarle -."i (United Press Staff Correspondent) London, Jan. 30. (By mail to New York) England lost a near-Kipling when a German shrapnel burst over the British advanced line of trenches in the vicinity of Ypres and numbered among its victims, Captain Robert Patrick Miles, of the Shropshire Light Infantry, attached to the Irish Rifles. Of all tfee letters fromt the front printed in the English newspapers none had breathed such a spirit of optimism nor portrayed witn sucn humor and intimate detail the life in the trenches as those of this officer. Hitherto they had appeared anony mously. The last he wrote was a description of the" amazing Christmas truee, arranged by the soldiers them selves after the Pope had failed to in duce the belligerent governments of ficially to en,ter into such an agree ment It did not reach England un til two weeks after his death. "We are having the most extraordi- .... . . vi n nary unnsunas uay wnaginauw, wrote, Captain Miles. "A sort of uri- arranged and quite anauthorized but perfectly understood and scrupulous ly observed truce exists between us and our friends in front A regular soldiers' , peace. The thing started last night, soon after dusk when the Germans started , shouting "Merry Christmas, ; Englishmen,' to us. Of course, our fellows shouted back, and presently large numbers of both sides had left their trenches unarmed, and met in the debatable, shot-riddled, no-man's-land between the lines. "Here the agreement all on their own came to be made that we should not fire at each other till after mid night tonight There was a half-moon and the ground was covered wita hoar-frost and one could aee mm shapes wandering about or standing round in groups, English and Ger mans, where it would have been death to have shown a whisker an hour or m before, ,. Vv"' i "We had heard some awfully In teresting latest new made in Ger manyas given out to our friends In front and which they Implicity be lieve. The main Items are: . The Germans have taken Moscow. Russian casualties in the retreat, three and a half million. , ' General Joffre ia dead. : British fleet is practically destroy The Allies hive sued for peace, the terms of which have been agreed to and will be published in a fortnight "Saturday The peace, which was supposed to terminate at midnight, avtm continue! willy nilly. The beg gars simply disregard all our warn ings to get down from off their para pet, so things are at a deadlork. We cant shoot them in cold blood and If we fire a shot over a man's head as a warning , he simply turns round, waves his hand to us, and goes on with what he ia doing. I cannot Imagine a more extraordinary state of affairs. I eannot see how we are to get them to return to business. Our guns, from far away in the background, rather unsportingly landed three high-ex plosive shells slap in their trench about ten o'clock.. That sent them down for ten minutes ot so, and than I'm dashed if a couple of them didnt come over and complain about it didn't seem to thjnk it was playing the game at all I rather fancy the powers that we are not best pleased with thir state of affairs, but I do not see how we can help it We are t be relieved this evening for our usual three-day rest" The very next day they returned to the trenches Capt Miles met his death.
