YORK, Traveling Passenger Agent, YOUNG 1IAN WILL SERVE BALANCE ROAD SENTENCE mmmmmimmm Hard times drove William Hughes here from some point in the State, where he has been living and sur render himself to the authorities to do six months of a two-year's sen tence for assault with a deadly wea pon. Hughes escsped from the roads in 1911 after he had worked out about J three-qujrfcers of his time. "' . With the law hanging over his bead and the knowledge .that he was doomed Jo eternal banUhment from home worrying him, Hughea wrote his father In the LaC range section. The elder Hughes got into communi cation with the eounty officials. .The young fellow, a stalwart fine-looking chsp, formerly was addicted to drink. He has completely reformer, he avers. It was whjle under the influence - of whiskey possibly . that he attacked Joseph Singleton with a knife and earned his sentence. . Tie authorities informed Mr, Hughes that if his son was willing to return and finish out his term there would be ell the leni ency possible shown him. So, when WU1 Hughes atepped into the Court house and manfully surrendered him self, he was sent to a job on the mo tor truck of the roads gang. The employment . there is not, nearly yso degrading, and he la not Uf be thrown1 into contact with the commoner . of the prisoners. v ; iu Hughes wanted to come back home. Making a living here when he has evened up scorer with the State will not be so hard as it was in Western Carolina, and in the conviction that he is aa good as any roan now and will make a good citizen and prosper, Hughes has gone cheerfully about bis task and la earning the admiration of those around him, MORNING I iiiuimui STOCK SELL TIME FOR 1 fl IS 1 1 WISE SAYINGS. Aa stated before In The Free Press, shares will be sold at $25, non-assessable and payable half down and half on the first day of Septem ber. Mr. Taylor hopes that no one approached will turn down the pre position flatly; at least one, share should be subscribed for every per son visited.
