LENOIR OIL & ICE COMPANY - DAY OF ELEPHANTS, SUGAR-COATED POP CORN AND LIKE NEAR Only a few days await the appear ance of the Carl Hagenbeck-Wallace Circus in Kinston. The date is Thursday, October 14, and the small boys as usual, are at fever heat in anticipation f what they, wilLsee and hear on circus day, acknowl edged to be better than Christjnas and the Fourth of July combined. Nothing seems to dim the popular ity of the circus, especially those of the larger type. A new crop of chil dren appear each year. They must see the dear good old clown and smell the sawdust. But the blare of the band, the rumble of heavy red wag ons and the roar of the lions seem to make the grown-ups, kids again on circus day. Of course, they gen erally say they are going to "carry the children to see the animals." But deep down in their hearts they know they would not miss the big show if there was not a small boy in a thou sand miles on circus day. Three trains are necessary to tran sport the Carl Hagenbeck-AVallace Circus. The first is known as the "flying squadron" and leaves the ex hibition city daily at 10 p. m., in or der to arrive during the early morn ing hours. Aboard is carried the com missary department and canvas hotel for breakfast must be ready at 7 a. rh. The second circus special carries the famous Oarl Hagenbeck menager ie and trained wild animals, together with tents, scats, paraphernalia and equipment not carried on the first train. The third and final section is made up almost entirely of Pullman sleepers bearing the performers, offi cials and employees not carried on the two preceding trains. An idea of the magnitude of the Carl Hagenbeck-Wallace Circus may be obtained from the immense street pageant to be seen on the down town streets at 10 o'clock preceding the first performance. There will be up wards of three miles of scintillating finery. More than 1,000 men, wo men and horses will be seen in the great display. Eighteen different na tionalities will be represented and the characteristic music of the world will be played upon brass instruments, torn toms, drums, fifes and cymbals. Eight bands will yield circus melody, augmented by two of the largest cal liopes ever constructed. Many of the dens containing the Carl Hagenbeck wild animals will be open for public display. There will be more than half a hundred elaborately carved and decorated tableau wagons and alle gorical floats. Three herds of pond erous elephants will make up the rear of the pageant. The performances will begin at 2 and 8 p. m. Doors to the Carl Hagenbeck zoo ivill be opened an hour earlier. People afoot are not to be subjected to prac tices of skill by negro delivery boys,. City Council decided Saturday night A number of people had complained of narrow escapes. It seems that careless cyclists were inclined to monopolize sidewalks, drive pedes trians into ditches and ride as close as possible to them without actually touching them to intimidate the un fortunate victims. An ordinance passed by Council re quires cyclists to dismount when passing people on foot. The meas-u-e is regarded as a temporary one, s'-ice when all the streets to be pav ed have been improved the bicycle districts will look on the map of Kin ston something like Turkey does on tha map of Europe since the last Bal kan war. Council also decided at Saturday's nueting to requi're plumbers to give $,r00 bonds against damage to streets from their activities. The aldermen voted to have the police enforce the anti-skating ordinance. Streets are being used by children with danger to themselves, it was pointed out. It was decided to empoy a city auditor. Applicants for the office are invited to apply to the Mayor or City Clerk. The office will be established at the beginning of the next fiscal month, November 9.
