STOLE TOBACCO IN , '
GREENVILLE, SOLD
IT HERE, CHARGED
Sam Willis, a negro watchman, is
in jail at Greenville, charged with
theft of tobacco from wagons left in
his charge at night and shipping it
to Kinston for sale. Willis was em
ployed at the Liberty warehouse in
Greenville. For. some months the
management had been aware of los
ses of the weed by planters who left
their animals and vehicles at the
house.
A telephone message from a Kin
ston warehouseman threw light on
the matter. He told the Greenville
men that a negro had been appearing
on local warehouse floors with crates
of tobacco that were poorly graded.
He suspected that "there wes some
thing wrong," and learning the col
ored man's address, telephoned to the
Liberty. A Greenville tobacconist
came here to Investigate, and evi
dence enough to hold Willis was se
cured. The total amount of the to
bacco stolen or its value, is unknown.
