The time for action is tow. The milk supply, as was suggested Saturday, may be responsible. The fly peat, the most dangerous of germ carriers, which has been given free and unrestricUd privileges to operate in Kin ston at will, largely by vrtue of the successful effort of stable men and others joining with them to thwart the operation of the anti-fly ordinance, may have and no doubt will be found upov investigation to be playing a very important part in the infection, not only as per tains to typhoid fever casei, but other diseases with which the people of this community are suffering. Be that as it may, regardless of where the responsibility lies, there should be no guess work about it. A competent and thor ough investigation should be instituted at once to ascer tain beyond a shadow of a doubt the cause, or causes, and then such remedial steps as m ay be required should be taken. A North Carolina boy is reported to have gained favor and promotion in Hhe aerial forces of France because of having attacked and brought down a German dirigible. The youngt man could be giving his talents to better and more lasting undertakings if he were back at home. The way the Hughes a'tock is climbing through the preferential primaries it begins to appear that the Col onel will have to be more "strenuous" than ever before if he hopes to be the standard bearer of the prospective coalition of (the Bull Moosera and the Old Liners. There have been auch a variety of estimates as to the number of people who attended the Charlotte celebra the crowds can't give tome authentic information. The tlon Saturday, we wonder if the railroads which handled the crowds can't give some authentic information. The reports from the passenger departments are awaited with Interest. ' ASPHALT HAS STOOD THE TEST. The attention of Kinston citizens is particularly di rected to an article appearing on the front page of to day's Free Press containing a letter from paving ex perts explaining the characteristics of asphalt pavinp The letters should allay the apprehension and suspicion of any who have felt that the visible signs of traffic on the new asphalt paving was an indication that 'the work being done was not of a durable character. The paving being done in Kinston is of similar material and quality to that which has stood the test on some of the most heavily traveled thoroughfares in the world. Fifth ave nue, New York City, more heavily traveled perhaps than any other thoroughfare in the world, famous Pennsylva nia avenue, Washington, and countless other important street are paved with the same material that Kinston is using. Tests, which Kinston will never, perhaps, give to its paving, have been applied in other places, and the asphalt has proven equal to thorn. There is no cause for uneasiness. The work here is being done by responsible people, and their guarantee stands back of it in addition to the known wearing qualities as demonstrated by the exocrience of other places. fMRF0IS0UT7IEmf O Derates Passenrrr Trains from North Carolina into Terminal Sta tion, NorfoIlf without Transfer. WHAT OTHERS SAY -i It ia good news from Washington to the effect that the revenue tax on loans Is to be lifted. The "two per hundred" has been a considerable item with some who art fortunate to hayjajine of. credit with their banks. Woman' right te a speaking part continues to receive recognition as evidenced by the consideration now being given, oy xne southern rresbyterian General Assembly, in session In Orlando, Florida,' to the question of creat Ing the office of deaconess. ' - WHY THIS FEVER T This same question was asked Saturday. It' was pro voked by the presence of at least cases of typhoid fever In Kinston. In Saturday's issue The Free .Press suggested that no time should be lost by the city author- i" in starting an investigation to ascertain the source of the infection. The situation la not yet alarming, al though two cases of typhoid fever a disease pronounced by the medical profession as positively preventable when well-known precautionary measures are 'taken, should be sufficient cause to arouse the community. There is no occasion for alarm if the proper steps are now taken to locate and remove the source ofthe disease. The pres ence of one case is sufficient to warrant a thorough in veatJgation, for the lame contamination that affects one person may affect a multitude arid until auch investiga tion ia made and the cause removed, no guarantee or as- KITCHINETTES! Greensboro Record: "The news comes from the east ern part of 'the state to the effect that Claude Kitchin will win hands down. Those" posted say New York, in the vicinity of Herald Square, will return n majority against him, but in his own district he will win all right." Winaton-Salem Journal: "Mr. Kitchin is getting good. Ho is actually well pleased with the plan proposed by the Administration for raising revenue to meet the ex penses of Government. If he keeps on improving, Mr. Kitchin will eventually take his place as a genuinely con structive leader of Democracy in the House." Raleigh Times: "Mr. Kitchin's belated satisfaction with preparedness measures may be due. in part, to cer tain other things that have been shown ito his satisfac lion." "It is reported that I vote the Na tional Republican ticket. This is an invention of my enemies, and is ab solutely false. It is also reported I have a road to build; so I have, but I am now building it. At the same time paying for it out of my pocket. I further believe that every town ship in the county should have its share of road work. In other words if the township pays $1,000 road tax, it should have the benefit of same.
