But fellows it was "some" train whH it lasted. We couldn't have "suffered" more mental anguish If we had bad some money on the affair. Mr. Willcox is right and the r.tuins todate from the forty eight states of the Union indicate that the people' have made it clear whom is their choicv. No! unquestion-1 ably no, the American people do not want a clouded title; hanging over their chief executive nor do they want to have any man, who would accipt such title, even par- ticlpating in a campaign as the nominee of any great party. Mr. Wilson has been choam to succeed himself at the rnd of a campaign which ha3 been marked o far as ho-has ' been concerned by that dignity and bearing, which shoul 1 characterize tha man, called to so lofty place. His op ponent, Mr. Hughes, has cn the other hand resorted 'o mud-slinging, maligning, and the circulation of unfomui- i od rumors and canards. In fact, Mr. Hughes' campaign, ' from the very issue of his carefully prepared attack on President Wilson 'n his acceptance of the nomination of hi party down to the last speech that he made was con ducted on a plane, which would be expected of a waH- I hoellng, peanut politician, bu. not from a candidate for high office. ! Mr. Hughes' vilification of the President of The Unit ed States, akhough b was his opponent, has be?n dis tasteful to every right thinking person and his su;p'rt has come not because of his unwarranted attack.-; on ins ' President or because the people, who have voted for him, thought he was right, but for partisan reasons and in ' spite of the disappointment in their candidate, Mr. Ik'jfhes. By way of warning: Let no precocious young trees in these parts get the idea that Spring and the time for the sap to rise has come. Old Jack tFrost will swoop down on us 'the first thing we know and assert his rights. Here comes IMtton before the smoke has cleared or even lifted from the battles of 1916 and makes the un pleasant suggestion that the Colonel will be the G. O. P standard bearer four years hence. Let's rest awhile. Looking at the map one sees that Mr. Hughes' section al ideas were strictly adhered to by the vote given him He received the electoral vote of no states outside thr north-central and eastern states except Oregon, whicl failed to keep atop with Jer sisters of. the West. . Old Jupiter Pluvhua butted Jin Friday night and broke it on the fun of the "tin horn" brigade, which had as sembled Itself to do honor to the fact that Woodrow Wil son had been re-elected. Thp fire crackers and other noisy apparatus for making a demonstration were not entirely drowned out though and some fun was had. SHOULD REQUIRE SEWER CONNECTIONS. When the people of Kinston voted for a hundred thou sand dollar bond issue in the Summer of 1914, it waa with the understanding that adequate sewerage would bo af forded all parts of the city and tha surface closets would be done away with. If The Free Press is corVectly Informed the main sew erage lines have been laid but there are still a number of iurface closets in the city limits. Just why these places are permitted, The Fre Press is not prepared to say. It is known that every health expert advises against sur face closets. Much typhoid fever and other Intestinal lad contagious disease is transmitted through surface closets. The authorities should see to it that sewer connections are required in every house in lh? city and that no su;--.ace closet in tolerated longer. 'By all means this matter Jught to hi attended to before the approach of hot weath er again. The people of Kinston should not be subjected to the menace of the surface closet another season. It begins to look like the Democrats of the House will have to do some trading with (he Progressive-ProhibiUon- SocUliet representatives and assign them to desirabk committee places in order to line them up for a vote and thus control the balance of power. The returns todate .ndicate that th? Republicans and Democrats have brsx- n even on the count. 'r When you go to buy car tridges for your rifle or pistol, you want to con sider that you're buying something "sight un seen." In other words, 'you don't know what's in 'em." That's the very reason why you should buy a reliable make. The reputation of Winchester cartridges is sufficient for you. They are always reliable."
