The intruder wa scared off by the screams of a wo man who saw his shadow on the wall from a nearby light and jumped throuj-'ii the window. Risk of Fighting Men Not Nearly So Great As Popularly Thought (Speci.il to The Free Press) Washington, Aug. 22. That the ri.-k of the lighting man is not near ly so great as is popularly imagined is the belief if Marine Corp.; offi cials here who have compiled statist ics covering the Allied losses in the war. A cartful estimate shows that on ly one man in fifteen is killed, and one out of live hundred loses a limb. Re-cent reports from French and British hospitals show that about 9" per cent recover from wounds, while about !() per cent are able to return to the firing line. While the Marine Corps officials held unbiased views in regard to the expected casualties among their own troops in France, it is pointed out that the "Soldiers of the Sea" recent ly engageo in warfare in Haiti, suf fered less thin one per cent losses. These were sustained while covering a wide terrain, lighting from house to house, and capturing and holding small redoubts, taken one by one from the enemy. This methed of warfare is said to be rapidly super seding the trench ystem on the West ern front. I.AJOIK MAY AliAIN UK HKi LEAGl'KK. liv H. C. Hamilton (I'nited Press Staff Correspondent) New York, Aug. 22. Nap La joie's success as a manager in the International league, and the recov ery ot Ins liatting eye are almost cer tain to drag the veteran back into the big leagues. Several clubs are known to have approached the baseball powers with a view to getting Lajoie, and at least one club has made him a tentative fTer to manage it next year. l.ajoie is satisfied with his lot Toronto. He is well liked there. His team has been in the pennant light all the way. and the club is prosper ous. Hence, he isn't figuring very heavily on leaving. The amount of noney offered him for his work a.-. big leaguer, however, is expected i have its effect. And there are clubs who are ready to put up a big price lor me trench mans services. Toronto is expected in baseball ciicles to have an American league ?-!ub before many seasons pass. In act, it is confidently expwetel the transfer will be made this winter. If Lajoie could be given the manager ship of this aggregation, or even if he were given a berth as a player he probably would be satisfied. It may come to pass that such an arrange ment could be made. Whenev er You Need a General Tonic Take Grove'a. If your hair is thinning out, life less, full cf dandruff, and your head itches like mad, it's a sure sign of the dangerous dandruff germ, and quick action must be taken to save what hair you have and start a new growth. Don't wait until the hair root is dead, for then nothing can help you, but get from your druggist four ounces of Parisian sage it don't cost much and there is nothiing you could use that's any better. Dr. Sangerbund, the famous Paris spec ialist, discovered that dandruff and falling hair are caused by a microbe then came the discovery of the value of Parisian sage (liquid form) to destroy this germ, prevent falling :iair and the formation of dandruff. A few massages with Parisian sage arc all that are usually needed, and very soon you should be able to see the new hairs coming in. Parisian sage is women's favorite hair dress ing, because it will not stain and makes the hair lustrous, soft and fluffy. Re sure you get Parisian sage (Giroux's), for this brand is guaranteed. J. E.
