from the Asheville Citizen of recent

the gee club and orchestra repre

night pleased an audience which in

To Lock After Kinston
lioys Christmas.
A community committee is lin
ing formed from the various relig
ious and fraternal organizations cf
Kinston to provide Christmas boxes
for all our 'boys now serving their
country in the army and navy," says
Secretary E. B. Lew's of the Cham
ber of Commerce. It is felt sure that
the committee's appeal for contribu
tions for this purpose will be gener
ously answered by all the people.
"Last yenr cur boys found them
selves in camp on Christmas Day
with no evidence from us that we
knew of thcir.absence or appreciated
their sacrifice, and we do not intend
that this shall happen again, when
so many of our people are ready and
anxious to join in sentfrng them a
Christmas remembrance."

Schcils to Close One Day.
The City Schools will close one
day for Thanksgiving. All cases of
absence Friday will be uneccused,
states the superintendent, Prof. K.
R. Curtis, unless the pupil is forced
by sickness to remain home. "The
work cf the schools is more import
ant than any otfier business" in the
City, he says, "and we do not want
a single day to go by without touch
ing the life of every boy and girl
enrolled. It requires 2P dayi to do
for your boy or girl what should be
done each month. If not present we
cannot reach them. Bo not do
them an injustice by giving them
your permission to be out of school."
Some Different.
The Free Press Friday stated that
Wiley Lowery, colored, Kinston, fin
ed $50 and costs at Greenville for
carrying a concealed weapon, was
also accused of robbing a man.
LoweTy says he was "riot accused"
but that another person had already
been put under arrest for the roh
bery; the money not being located
however, it was decided that it had
been thrown on the ground. Lowery,
standing near the spot where it was
supposed to" have bees thrown, was
accosted by an officer, wao "ran his
hi.nd through his clothes," finding no
money but a pistol. These details
are printed at Lowery's request.

John McGraw has stated on num
erous occasions that if Robertson
only would try hard he could easily
become the National league's great
at hitter probably the league's
greatest baseball player. But Dave
never has tried, if McGray's state
ments are correct. He has been just
an cutftelder, but not the seat by any
means.
It now appears likely Robertson
will be drafted into the new nation
al army, for he has Ibeen ordered td
report since the death of his broth
er, who had been sent to camp. Rob
ertson was married after the draft
decision had been reached in Wash
ington.
