SATURDAY EVENING, FEBRUARY 9, 1918. Florida has nothing on the Old North State now on heatlass Mondays. . When Ithe names of the "willful fow" arc recorded in the Senate annals, those of Chamlborlain and Hitchcock should not be omitted. editor of Tn Free PreM included, hod been miscon strued by the local board, have, it seems, been cleared up and the dependency conditions' relation to the classi fication of the men clarified. An encouraging featuic of the statement is the an nouncement that an opportunity will ihe given to rijrh any errors that have been made leoause of such nrs construction. The local board, with the Governor's con sent, it is stated, has extended the time for making ap peal to each and every registrant until and including February 18th. This does not mean that every regis trant who has "been classified, will exercise the right of appeal and cause the board to review all its work. It does mean that every man, who has wife and children or those mainly dependent upon him, and who has not beer classified accordingly, wili have the right to ask for a rehearing, through the appeal channels. It does moan that whatever injustice has ibecn occasioned by the mis construction of the law by the board can be righted. Both Major Lan?.ston and the Legal Advisory Hoard jrive assurances that no evidence was found tending to indicate that the local board was inspired by other than patriotic motives to do its full duty both to registrants and the Government. This is further evidenced by the action of the board in extending the right of appeal. The Free Press has never questioned the motives of the board. It has questioned its judgment in the application of the law. The statement makes no reference to the .alleged use of unseemly language by members of the loard. It is presumed that the rumors of such were dispelled o1 satisfactorily explained to the Governor's representative. It was good news, carried first in the columns of The free Press Friday, that "beatless Mondays" for those parts are to be no more. Thanks to the good weather that now seems to (Im endeavoring to mtike up for all its past "tenribleness." 1 The American spirit was typified when the boys aiboand the sinking Taiwan ia lined up along the guard rail and sang patriotic songs while awaiting their turn t the life boats or a dip in the Hen, they know not which. The statement of the Legal Advisory Hoard of Lenoir .Cpurtty, carried in Frwfay's Free Press, pertaining to tha visit of Major Langaton of the governor's office to Kin ston and his conference with the legal and exemption boards relative to the classification of registrants, makes it appear that the classification of registrants will be at tended by more satisfactory results hereafter than in the past Certain essential provisaons of Hhe Selective Draft Regulations, which, in the estimate of many, the MR. BAILEY'S ADDRESS. The address of lion. Joniah Uailey, collector of In ternal Revenue for the Eastern District of North Caro lina, before the mass meeting at the tf'hristian Church Friday night, was a summons to the patriotism of his hewrers. Mr. Bailey well nmphas-icd the enormity of the strug gle in which the United States is now engaged. He minimised the "peace rumors" and warned his hearers that Germany was showing no signs of weakness where her strength was essential to arms. The keynote of Mr. Bailey's nddrcss the one which should go ihomc to every man, woman and child in Ameri ca was individual responsibility of the people in win ning the war. "What can I do? What must I do?" is the thought that should 'burden the mind of every loyal man nnd woman in America. The great load, which has been assumed by this country, cannot be carried by the boys on the firing line alone. They must be supported by the folks back homo to the consecration of the last ntom of resource, if necessary. Trie boys in the trench es stand trendy to give their all, if need Hie, and the peo ple at home must likewise be prepared. Mr. Bailey sipoke in the interest f the War Savings Stamps sale nnd ho pointed out very clearly the splend id opportunity the purchase of the amps afforded the hunnlblest individual for doing his or her bit.
