Few Transfers From British Army to the American; Obstacles OUJtKI By Lowell Mellett 'United Press Staff Correspondent) London, March 8 (By Mail). Siuce America entered the war thousands of applications have been made to U. S. Army authorities in Lundon by Americans in the British armies for transfer to their own. Of these thousands just six men have eon transferred. I learned this today when I pre sented the case of a Texas news paperman to the final authority in ho matter. The Texas man had c.ved .three years in the Philippines When the present war broke out he was living comfortably on a satis factory salary if there is such i hing and driving his own HupmO' ile. His comfortable position was the fruit of 15 years or so of steady work and he thought he wanted n holiday. Since the war could only last a few months, it would provide the holiday and he journeyed to Can ada to join. Recently he was transferred from ance to Mesopotamia. Before go ing he placed his application for a transfer to the U. S. Army and after arriving somewhere East of Suez he wrote me to investigate his chances. What I found very quickly was that is chances were none. "You say he's in Mesopotamia T" said the final military authority That would mean that I should have to ask the British army to turn him loose it's all a matter of court esy on the British Army's part, by the way to come from Mesopotamia cn his simple statement that he was coming to join the American -rn17. Granted that your friend really would do it and find his own expense mon ey for the trip, you can understand that what we do for one we have to do for all. We'd have to do it for thousands, scattered over Europe, Asia and Africa. Pleasant news I've got to break to the man in Mesopotamia. CARD OF THANKS. W"e want to thank the people for their kindness during the sickness nd death of our father and husband. Jv. JOHN S. HART. Why We iiBif "aP jftjilll Recommend The Dtomatic The system of cold, dry air circulation is such that your foods will not spoil. There is no moisturein tin Automatic. - It saves food bills, and as you will have no tainted foods it saves doctor's bills. Iiy reason of the manner in which this cold, dry air constantly circulates being purified as it passes over the jce food odors will not mix! Your milk will-not taste of onions; your butter will not taste of fish; odors will not mix! " , ' . There are eight heat-resisting, cold-retaining walls. (We will show this to you.) So, you get more refrigeratioon for less ice. If ever a refrigerator was built that will save its cost because of ice economy it is the Automatic. It certainly saves ice bills. ' The water cooler, which takes up no food space and no ice space re quires no ice in the water; the removable and easily cleaned shelves; the wonderfully simple and sanitary trap; a dozen reasons why we should and do recommend the Automatic.
