'Friends of th schools have faith that tha county wide tax will carry.' If they didn't they would feel like hanjf ittg their heads in shame for Iheir county. Now that tha JIuns are 'throwing bottles into the lines of the Americans it: will not be surprising if the volunteers from certain claMM show a tteticeahle in crease. .If Ltnoir County is to be represented in the next Gen eral Assembly by a capable man it 'Is high time some announcements were being made of candidates. The matter ought not to go by default. 'Raleigh News A Observer: "There is no longer a monopoly of trie' man jvith a hoe." No but the other sex bids fair to monofwlTxe tha impfoment if the men don't get a hustle on them and answer the garden calls. 1 The Kaiser's peace terms, said to have been sent to London through former Dutch War Minister Colyn, lack a very important propoifr,' to-wit: The abdication of the Kaiser and his aix sons. Nothing short of the com plete overthrow of the llohensollern dynasty will mean peace. MR. HOLLENGA A GOOD SPEAKER. The return engagement of Mr. Dan S. Hollenga, native of Holland, who spoke in Kinston on the occasion of the annual meeting of the Chamber of Commerce in April, should bring out an overflowing audience at the Grand Theatre Thursday night. On account of other meetings Mr. Hollenga was not given a very large hearing on his first isit and it was s source of regret to all who heard him that more of Kinston's people had not availed them selves of the opportunity. Mr. Hoilenr'i is a utroni; speaker. He is well educated and has a first hand know;eIge of Germany and her ideals. His engagement Thursday night will be uniler the auspices of the Red Cross. Manager Stalling of the Grand has tendered the use of his house. He will give only one show beginning at 7rW p. m., in order that Mr. Hollenga's address may start i.y 9 p. m. The patrons of the Grand will do well to keep in mind the 7:30 hour ami cooperate with Mr. Stallings in helping the Red Cross campaign. The action of the city council in granting to the police force an increase in pay should meet with the approval of the citizens generally. It is out of the question in these times of high prices for people to live decently on salaries that afforded them only a living one or two years ago. Even with the increases the policemen of Kinston are getting only about enough to make ends meet and that too with good management. Every little bit helps, however, and the beneficiaries of the council's action will no doubt view the matter in that appreciative light. V When a fellow realizes that the countywide tax is the only plan now available whereby the schools of Lenoir County may be kept up to a desirable standard he must either vote for the tax or admit that he is not a friend of the boys anil girls and that he is not in favor of their being properly educated. The question in its final analys is is either for or against the schools. A vote for the tax is for the schools. A vote against the tax is against the s.-hools, whatever may be the camouflage of argu ment behind which the anti hides. Commenting on a meteor recently observed in differ ent parts of the country the Wilmington .Star says among other things: "We refuse to get excited over the caprice of Venus, but when Mars gets to circumlocuting in its orbit, we sure'y sit up and take notice." We are prone to ask if the god of war is not already "circumlocuting" enough to satisfy our friend Colonel Clawson? . The Four-Minute Men throughout the country are tak ing a well earned week's lay-off after their splendid work in behalf of the Third Liberty Ixan campaign. Next week they will enter upon the Red Cross campaign and continue their short, to-the-point messages to hundreds of thousands of movie fans throughout the length and breadth of the United States. The men who ought to offer themselves as candidates for the important offices this year seem to be taking the "lion and the lamb" suggestion of Governor Pickett a lilllc too literally. The prospect for several of the important public places is that the voters will have no alternative but to fill them with very mediocre material. Somebody remarks: "I don't see how any intelligent man can vote against the schools." 'Tis hard to com prehend.
