The United States Department of Agriculture is today engaged in send ing individual official notices to 58,- 000 manufacturers that after May 1, 1915, the ."Guaranteed Under k the Pure Food and Drugs Act" label will be unnecessary. This action follows a ruling by the Secretaries of the Treasury, Ag riculture and , Commerce that the people are , . deceived into believing tbat that Btamp is the government guarantee ot the purety of the ar ticle. Such a stamp means, simply that the manufacturer will protect his dealer if any charges are made that the goods are misrepresented, Next year the stamp will be required only upon the bill of sale. Agricultural experts have discov ered an insect that has sixty kinds of enemies who want to eat it up! and the department wants to protect the "enemies." Most ot these devourers are birds, with orioles.:; swallows and night- hawks aa the most Important. The scientists declared the Insect none other than the boll weevil of cotton fame must be destroyed because of ifsTnarm to the South's cotton plan tations. An investigation showed that the ulghthawk caught the weevil ; while It buzzed in the air, en route on us winter vacations the migrations southward. During the cotton arrdwine months the swallows get in their best work for they snap the boll weevils while they fly over the fields. In addition to these two Diras 58 others are waiting every oppor tunity to "gobble" the cotton "re bel." , ' : "s-:'yr R. Molk-Scuthern R. R.
