HIRTEEN PRISONERS ESCAPE
Through a Hole in the Ceiling of
York, S. C., Jail.
TWO MURDERERS AMONG THEM.
Well Planned, Well Kxrciiled Scheme
ISlootl Hounds) Following Tracks
Matle Ity Them.
Y'orkville, S. C (Special). There
xvas a wholesale delivery of prisoners at
the count jail SundiU' niornins, about :
o'clock. Anions the prisoners that es
caped are M. . Peese and Iave F.
Luckie, convicted of the murder of
Chiis. F. Williams, of Tunnel Hill,
(!a. , i.inl sentenced to the penitentiary
for life, but waitinv; the result of an ap
peal to the Supreme Court. There
were only two white prisoners that es
caped, but in addition to these were
eleven nevrroes, v, ho clVected their es
cape also. These neyrroes are charged
with various misdemeanors, but noneof
the crimes are serious.
The escape of the prisoners was not
discovered until about 7 o'clock Monday
morninv:, but Sheriff Lovan promptly
jv'ave tiie alarm and summoned his
posses.
The miinner in which the delivery
was effected shows a "Teat deal of
invenuity and is undoubtedly due to
the fertile brain of M. P. Peese. When
the jail was searched it was found that
a hole lartre enouvh to admit the botly
of a man had beeu bored from the cell
of Peese through the ceilinv;. Through
this hole the prisoners crawled to a
point directly over the stairssay. Mere
another hole was cut in the ceiling and
by means of blankets the prisoners let
themselves down to the lloor, ami from
there to the "round by means of the
stairssav ssas a vers- simple tbiiifj.
For four successive years the frrantl
jury has recommended that cashes be
put in the jail iu place of the present
insecure arrangement, but the county
commissioners have been deaf to such
appeals. No blame can be attached to
Sheriff Lovran, nor were the people of
this town surprised at -the delivery for
the condition of the jail xvas well
knosvn.
Plood hounds have been secured and
are now following tracks supposed to
have been made by some of the prison
ers. It is the common supposition that
Peese drove to Pock Mill iil convey
ances provided for him by his friends
ami there took the train for the North.
Me xvas knosvn to have had about S-hOUO
on his person.
'1 here is a .treat deal of excitement
over the delivery and rewards will un
doubtedly be oli'cred. On a Bible of
Luekie's'left in his cell was found these
words: "P. 11. Pees, Jhivid F. Luckie,
in remembrance of us."
The dovcrnor has been asked to offer
a resviml of Sent , but it is not likely
that he will oiler this amount.

xvent to the Molston river and drowned
themselves. A note found in Pi). lev's
pot kef vetiuested that the bodies be
buried iu the same eoilin. 'i'he cause
cf the act is supposed to have been ill
feeling between the Piplc.v and Suther
land families. Pipley was highly con
nected ami had been in the United
States arms- for sometime. TI1C3- had
on I.v been married ten da.vs. Two vials
of laudanum were found near them, and
they had cut the bell rope from the
church, evidently for the purpose of
tying themselves together. Pefore
taking the fatal leap they piled their
outer gaiments and saddles in a church
ami let their horses loose. Pipley was
a close kinsman of Col. Pipley, of

Better Prices for drains The Influ
ences on the Cotton Market.
Messrs. H. (. Dun & Co. say:
"Slightly l etter prices for wheat, cot
ton, wool and iron and a money market
xvell adapted to encourage liberal pur
chases against future impiovement in
business, have rendered the past week
more hopeful than any--other since earl v
in November. The heavy excess of
merchandise exports over imports in
January, the continuance of exchange
rates showing that Furope is still large
ly indebted to this country on current
account, and the prospect that Congi ts
will adjourn without any disturbing
action, all have their favorable inllu
ein e on the money market, ami upon
further undertakings.
"i'he sales of wools have sharply de
clined, amount'ng to 7,-in'.,:i( pounds
for the v, .ek, aL.nnst ik bV7.:!eo fi.i the
previous week, but osviii'r to the heavy
transactions early in the month, the
sales for thre weeks have been :io,
PjO.tino pounds, against P!, iiS7('i
pounds last year. T he larire mills have
ac'iuired large supplies for the present,
and at any advance of price thc.v appear
rejidy to drop out of the market. The
demand for woolen goods docs not seem
to have expended materially, ami no
lUolalile change in prices has appeared
during the week.
'The heavy exports in January, fol
lowing the unprecedented excess of ex
ports over imports of merchandise in
the four previous months, are largely
due to the fact that neither the wheat
nor the cotton markets ha-.e been ma
terially controlled by speculation.
"Figures at this season do not count
for much in cotton, though there is a
large demand on account of the partial
closing :.f many mills, which has ma
terially inrliieiicetl the market Prices

A bUHtRB TEMPLE.
New Home of the Scottish Kite M
on of Indianapolis.
The new Scottish Kite Masonic Tem
ple in Indianapolis is considered the
finest thing of its kind in America. Cer
tainly no Masonic temple has more
gorgeous fittings, and none has as much
room devoted exclusively to Masonic

purposes. The temple was iM'gun in
May last year, un.l the corner Htone
was la itl in July. It Is now complete,
even lo the delicately lined cnrcting
on the Moor and the Oriental hangings
on the Willis. The building has a front
age of so feet and a depth of KC feet.
It is nine stories. The lirst two stories
are faced with oolitic lime stone, uiitl
above this the facing is buff-colored
brick. All above the tirst floor is used
for Scottish rite puroscs. The build
ing is as nearly tire-proof as it was pos
sible to make It.
The cattle business has always been
n great source of revenue to Colorado,
and up to within the last live years
horses were bred ami dealt in quite ex
tensively, but the sheep business hna
been, as it were, an obsolete industry,
says the Denver Times. To ihosu who
lived in the southern and southwestern
parts of the State the sight of a cloud of
dust arising in the distance and herald
ing tiie approach of a flock of the small
quadrupeds is a familiar sight. The
Mexican population of that part of
Colorado is largely made up of sheep
raisers nnd their herders. The field
for woolen mills in this part of the
country is good, but so far no one lias
ciirtv! to enter into the project, although
it hat- often been discussed.
A Christmas Legend in Uclj;iuiii.
The children of P.t-lgiuin have a
charming Christmas legend about San
ta Clans' Pony. They always place
their wooden sabots on the window
ledge, stuffed full of o.its, hny, and
fodder for the "dear Christmas pony."
In the early morning they run on tip
toe to look; and behold! the hay is all
gone, and the .shoes are brimming over
wiih toys ami sweetmeats! Then the
children chip their hands svlth glee, and
wisli they could only have waked in
time to see the pony munching his
oats. Thai would have been such fun!
