A fpecial from Cape ilaytiea gives
the following account of the engage
ment at Santiago, between tho Ameri
can aud S auish fleets:
'Ihe American 6juadron, auiiuiente-1
by the torpedo boat Porter, the auxil
iary enmer New Orleans, foriaeily
the Amazonas, approached theentranco
to the harbor of Santiago, at about 1 : '.'
p. ni., the Iowa leading. Inside the
entrance to the harbor xvas teen one of
the warships of Cervera's tleet, stripped
for action.
As the American fleet drew near the
New Orleans w as detached and steaL- I
forward ahead of the Iowa, 'lexas and
Massachusetts. One of the forts opened
lire on her and she replied, the other
two ships directing their li: e at the
J'unta (iorda within the harbor and
westward of the position occupied by
the Spanish ship. The latter 1 eplied t j
the lire and immediately became a
target for all the American ships en
gaged in th8 battle. She retired be
hind a protecting headland and was
i:ut seen again during the engagement.
Ihe Iowa, directed by ('apt "Fight
ing I!ob"' Evans; the Massachusetts by
('apt. F. J. Higgiusou; the Texas by
( apt. J. V. Phillips, and tho New Or
leans by (.'apt W. M. Folger, kept up
their terrific Are against the Mono, Zo
capa and 1'unta (Jorda forts for two
hours, their projectiles, of . enormous
size, doing tremendous damage to the
defences of the harbor.
The masonry on Zocapa and Mono
was battered almost into dust and the
forms of Spanish artillerj-meu and in
fantry could be plainly seen flying to
safety behind the neighboring hills.
The auxiliary cruiser xvhich joined
Schley's fleet just before the battle took
place, was hit b3 shells from the forts,
and it is thought that she has been seri
ously damaged by the shells. After
seeking the protection of a jutting head
laud, the Spanish warships continued
to fire over tho hills toward the fleet,
but they had no range and the shells
feil harmlessly. That the number of
killed ami wounded on tho Spanish side
is enormous no one doubts, for time
and agein the American shells hit the
batteries squarely aud amid the flying
masonry and dismantled guns tho forms
of men were discerned. Ihe damage
dono to tho American fleet cannot be
leal ueil, but it is not thought any per
son was killed, if, indeed, any one was
wounded.
French Cable Company's Aoeeiint.
The daily bulletiu issued by the
French Cable Company savs the Ameri
can tleet, composed of four ships, of
whica one appeared to bo the New
Voik and flew the flag of Admiral
Sampson, aud a few torpedo boats,
opened lire on the forts aud on ihe
roadstead with heavy guns. Ihe fire
of the Americans appeared to be dir
ected principally on the roadstead and
on the forts of Kl Morro, Zocapa aud
I'uuta (Jorda. The cannonade was
very brisk up to 3: to. The shells fell
in the bay, but did not reach as far as
the town. After 3:V the cannonade
w eakened aud cannon shots w ere heard
in the oiling. The Americans com
plete! v ceased tiring after 4 o'clock iu
the afternoon.
