The amount of rain since July, culminating in a freshet in the fall, has somewhat reduced the amount of grain for the mar ket, and has hindered the sowing of wheat, yet business we are told is good. The awful condition of our public roads is a self evident fact of the need of better ones. Our law makers will certainly confer a favor upon the county to have better rouds', even if they do cost a little money and more work. What costs you nothing usually is not worth much. Our office was graced on Mon day morning by a bridal party. Mr. James M. Shanks, of Temes see, was married in the office to Miss Rosa A. Wilkins, of McDow ell county. In view of thr large and permanent increase of Federal expenditures foreshad owed iu the department estimates all measures designed to lessen the war taxes must be classed as pure buncombe, prepared for home con sumption in remote Congressional districts. The stamp taxes, like the English sparrow and the San Jose scale, have come to stay. The sooner a cough or cold is cuied without harm to the sufferer the better. Lingering colds aie dangerous. The New York Herald gives voice to the general sentiment with reference to the President's message when it declares that he should have said more or written less.
