Dre HATHAWAY & CO., So. Broad St., Atlanta, Ga. We are glad to know that some of our Republican friends are n nv beginning to sec the error of their way and are willing to line up with the Democrats in demanding an open ti, Id in the markets of the world, to purchase their raw ma tt r'uils, unhampered by any legis lation enacted in favor of "infant" industries. Republicans in the west, w here wool growing is an ex tensive ind stry, are askirg for a protective duty on wool, but to oH set this, the Ihpulicans of the New Kngland states, are clamoring for all raw materials to be put on the free list j-nd demanding that wool stay where it is. Senator Frye, of Maine, voices the demand in the introduction of a bill for the revision of our tariff laws so that all raw materials us ed in the construction f ships 1( allowed to come in free. We will be glad to M C this mertSiin- pass, as a high tariff en all ship supplies, inaugurated by th- Republicans, has practically debarred our citi zens from ship building as an in dustry and as cur merchants can not purchase foreign made vessels, we have been tlegraihtl from a first rate nation, in the carrying trade to a nation that is almost wholly dependent on other countries for the transportation of our freight etc. We know that the sensbleness cf a low tariff would be appreciat ed when once it was given a trial, but we were surprised t' see an endorsement of the Democratic principles of free trade, come from Senator Frye. it as been die metrically opposed to the teach ings of his party. We like to sea a man willing to stand by his convictions, even though he" may have to change his policy; and we can cordially congratulate Senator Frye on the light that has broken through the dense clouds, that have surrounded his intellect. v Everybody is invited to take a FREE look at NICHOLS BROTHERS' Large and new stock of General Merchandise.
