NEWS OF THE STATE Happenings of General Interest Condensed for Busy Readers. Halifax county will vote Novem ber 14 on a issue of $300,000 of bonds for public roads. This is a high compliment to Cald well county, as Wilkes is now be ing widely advertised as tbo best fruit growing section of the State. Lenoir Topic. At the celebration of Founders' Day at Trinity College last week gifts to the institution aggrecating $235,000 were announced. J. B. and J. N. Duke gave $201,000 for building purposes and $27,500 for support fund. The North Carolina Conference gave $4,309 and the Western North Carolina Confer ence $1,000 for running expenses. Mr. Jas. S." Spainhour, of Pitts burg, Pa., a former Lenoir boy, has recently invented and con structed a flying machine. The Pittsburg papers tell of Mr. Spain- hour's recent test of his machine and of his daring flight in it of 1,000 feet in the air. Mr. Spain- hour will likely make a good thing financially from his invention. His numerous friends here congratu late him upon his success. Lenoir Topic. A rather interesting "visitor to Asheville yesterday was Mrs. Dar- kus GrifEn, of Madison county, who passed through this city en- route to Canton, where she will reside in the future. Mrs. Griffin is 107 years old, has perfect sight, hears well and speaks with case.
