I EDUCATIONAL COLUMN Maud Barnard, Editor. in To achieve real success, teaching must be made an interesting business. Ideal teaching, then, will be at the same time professional and artistic, socially useful aud personally pleas ant. Only the man of fine qualities can enter the lists and joyously achieve. George H. Palmer. Stroudtown. Good reports are coming in from Stroudtown. The enrollment is the highest known in the history of the school. The one hundred and nine pupils are keeping the two teachers busy. The house is much too small for this number of pupils and another teacher is need ed. Altho' greatly handicapped by these conditions Misses Louise Brown and Grace Finley are doing excellent work. Two literary so cieties have been organized and both girls and boys are very much interested. The larger boys have been doing some active betterment work and the school grounds are much improved. every man in the district came him self or sent a hand to their all-day working. At Garden City the boys, large and small, are digging stumps, piling brush, etc. A num ber of the schools are making play grounds for the children. In some cases where the school grounds are not large enough for this, the pro gressive patrons are offering their land. We would like to have reports for every school doing apy of this work.. Notice. The Reading Circle books are now in the Superintendent's ofiice and the teachers are requested to call and get them as soon as possi ble. "Every Day Problems" will be the first one studied at the Teachers' Meetings. NEWS FROM THE COUNTY Brief Mention of Some of the Hap penings in McDowell County Items About Home People.
