If you will allow vok a little space I will tell your readers of the "big bills' something about the coast country. It is Very romatic and interest ing to live on the coast and watch the rolling waves and hear them as they boom upon the siore like tin distant rumhle of thunder; to think of the pioneer settlers when 'iiey built their rude homes of logs and fought the Indians and wild animals, until the storms come and property is destroyed and some times lives lost, then we long for the protection of the hills and mountains. ' The people here; depend upon the sea altogether for a livelihood. Tnere is little farming done here, none in some sections. In winter the men gather oysters while the women work in the canning 'fac tories. The men get from 15 to 20 cents a bushel for oysters at the factories and the women are paid ten cents a gallon for open ing them. A good hand can open ten gallons of oysters a day. In the summer the men fish by net ting, as they call it, and sometimes they will get $300 dollars worth of fish at one haul. When fish and osters are plentiful the fishermen make good money as there is al ways sale for all they catch. One totwosentsa pound is paid for thin fish by the fish houses. While the weather is .cold here it is not as cold as it is in tle mountains. The lowest tempera ture we have Lad this . winter was 26 above zero. We have had no snow and but little ice. . Cattle, sheep, hogs and ponies live all win ter on the banks without feed or any attention whatever. Hundreds oL-ponies-and cattle are raised on the banks without cost' to the own ers. You can buy a good 600 to 800 pound pony for $75, and beef steak is only twelve cents a pound.
