Miss Celeste Hankel, As sistant Superintendent of this coun ty, writes that great good has al ready been accomplished and that the plans are broadening for a much greater service. One of the plans provides that the Domestic Science Class of the school will furnish hot milk and cocoa to the children who are below normal physically and otherwise in poor health. The Board says that those com munities and schools that actively sold Red Cross Seals this Christ mas could no more wisely spend the money raised from tne pro ceeds of the sale than by convert ing it into an open air school for tuberculous and subnormal child ren. Signs warning automobiles, drays and carriages to keep to the right have been placed at the intersection of the principal streets of Hickory. D. Li. Robertson, of Marmaduke, re cently killed a full blooded Duroc hog, which weighed 640 pounds whon dressed. Alfred J. Drapalik, a machinist of the Atlantic Coast Line at Rocky Mount, has just been given a patent upon what is considered the most sightly, and most sanitary street can yet devised. A bunch of Rockingham county farmers will visit Hickory and States ville during the first week in the new year for the purpose of inspecting the dairy farms and creamery in that couunty and the Iredell test farm near Statesville. Mr. Jessee M. Jones, Agricultural and Field Agent of the United States Department of Agriculture, has been secured to deliver the principal ad dress on Swine Day, a feature of the meeting of the North Carolina Live stock Association at Salisbury, January 25. Maj. George L. Peterson of Samp son county w^as in Raleigh recently v/ith Adjutant General Young and a,nd brought the story of Sampson’s “lay-out” to Julian Street and Wal lace Morgan ,who were here a few weeks ago writing up North Carolina for Collier’s. JMaterial is now being placed for an addition to the w^arehouse of the Peo ple’s Bonded Warehouse & Storage Co., at Gastonia. For the first time since it was built about four years ago this warehouse is full and the company is using tka Farmers’ Union warehouse to stock the overplus. Demand for hardwood is on the in crease, if anything, according to re ports made by dealers in the western part of the state, but the congestion of traffic on the Peansylvania and oth er Eastern roads is interfering ser iously with the filling of export or ders. The prize winning essay on the wisdom, and necessity of prepared ness, submitted in the contest held under the auspices of the National Security League at New York for the prize of $500 offered by Jules S. Bache, of New York, was written by Landon M. Townsend, of Raeford. N. C. > • “Step to one side, I want to shoot you.” This was the command that greeted John Hayes, * a prominent young farmer, about 23 years of age, as he was v/alking home with two young women near Tryon recently. Failing to stand aside, Hayes was killed by Frank Fostor, who had issued the command. Foster submitted and is held without bond. Salisbury’s first community Christ mas tree was featured by the intro duction of real camels, secured from a circus wintering in the city, by which the “wise men from the East” were borne to the improvised scene of the birth of the Child Jesus. A MARION INTERVIEW Mr. Williams Tells His Experience. The following brief account of an in terview with a Marion may three years ago, and its sequel, will be read with keen interest by every citizen. J. F. Williams, mgr. Telephone Co., Johnson St., Marion, says: “I ^as all run down from kidney trouble and the best doctors in the state had no hope for my recovery.
