Lent as a period of physical re cuperation has rong ago received the endorsement of sanitary ex perts as well as exhuasted devotees of society. But we imagine that at a time of such heart searching as the present, even scientific cynics will be disposed to feel that its ob servance is closely connected with the things that touch the moral welfare of all mankind. Religion ought not to be a matter of days or of seasons, and it is not with those who are in earnest; but hu man nature, whatever denomina tional dress it may wear, needs special occasions of spiritual revival and refreshment. The miracle of Pentecost must be repeated each year, if Pilgrim is to keep up his progress toward the holy city. This Lenten season, like that of last year, is invested with unusual solemnity and .significance by the crucifixion of humanity that is go ing on in Europe. After all, the meaning of that awful calamity goes far deeper than conflicting dy nasties or race ambitions. It goes down to the foundations of civili zation and religion. Can we con template such a spectacle without asking whose sins and omissions have nailed these millions of hu man beings to the cross of the bloodiest war in all the ages ? Em peror William, King George,* the Czar of Russia? Yes, but only as they are products of our religious practices and standards. Can reli gion, like Pontius Pilate, wash its hands of the blood of the victims of this European madness? Re ligion, in the abstract, it is true, cannot be indicted on this charge. The crime cannot be laid at the door of any creed prevailing among the so called Christian nations of the world. But a timely Lenten question is. How far is the religious creed of love, mercy and justice still a living force among men? Humanity on its iron cross and with its crown of thorns is asking the disciples of religion that ques tion now, as it has for eighteen months past; and the world’s fu ture will depend on how that ques tion IS answered. Whether the churches realize it or not, they are on trial. The world must grow better or worse, and whether it shall do the one or the other will be determined by the spiritual attitude and the prac tice of those who, in the taber nacle, cathedral, church or syna gogue, profess to pray for the re viving spirit of the creator of the universe. Southern Girls in Various Clubs. Washington, March 29.—Home demoqstration work among women in southern states by the depart ment of agriculture brought 32,- 613 girls into canning clubs, 9,854 into poultry clubs and 3,062 into bread clubs during 1915. More than 6,000,000 pounds of vegetables and fruits were canned. The aver age profit from each tenth of an acre that the canning club girls were required to cultivate was $24.01. A poultry club girl clear ed $164.17 profit from 30 hens. There are now over 350,000 In dians in the United States and 25,- 000 in Alaska. Morganton, March 29.—A pre liminary hearing of the alleged wife-murderer, Charles Mace, was held before Justices Kirksey and Hallyburton yesterday. The pris oner waived preliminary examina tion and was committed to jail without bond. Spainhour and Mull and Attorney Jonas have been employed to conduct his defense. It is said he claims his wife com mitted suicide. The dead woman’s relatives have employed Avery and Huffman to assist the solicitor in the prosecution. It will likely be a hard fought case. There was a large crowd on the court square to catch a glimpse of Mace, but there was no demonstra tion whatever. He appeared to be in a very nervous condition. Catarrhal Deafness Cannot be Cured by local applications, as they cannot reach the diseased portion of the ear. There is only one way to cnre catarrhal deafness, and that is by a constitntional remedy. Catarrhal Deafness is cansed by an inflamed condition of the mucous lining of the Enstachian Tube. When this tube is inflamed you have a rum bling sound or imperfect hearing, and when it is entirely closed. Deafness is the result. Unless the inflammation can be reduced and this tube restored to its normal condition, hearing will be de stroyed forever. Many cases of deaf ness are caused by catarrh, which is an inflamed condition of the mucous sur faces. Hall’s Catarrh Cure acts thru the blood on the mucous surfaces of the system. We will give One Hundred Dollars for any case of Catarrhal Deafness that can not be cured by Hall’s Catarrh Cure Circulars free. All Druggists, 75c. F. J. Cheney & Cto., Toledo, O. Resourceful.
