Germany Apologizes for Sinking Sussex. WashiDfftOD, May 10—Germany, in a note received by the State De partment today by cable from Am bassador Gerard, admits that a German submarine torpedoed the channel steamer Sussex in violation of assurances ^iven the United States, expresses re&:ret for the incident, announces that the sub marine commander has been *'ap- propriately punished” and declares readiness to pay an adequate j demnity to Americans injured on the vessel. It was indicated at the State De partment that the German state ment that the offending comman der had been punished would be accepted, and the Sussex case con sidered closed except for arranj; ing for the payment of indemnities to the several citizens of the Unit ed States who were hurt. Mexi- No Agreement Reached at can Conference, El Paso, Texas, May 11.—After almost two weeks of discussion the conference of Generals Scott and Funston and General Obregon, Mexican minister of war, over American troop disposition in Mexico, came to an end tonight without any agreement being reached. Another explanation of the “mysterious” Brown mountain light which has caused so much comment is advanced by Mr. R. P. Connelly, of Charlotte. His theory would base the cause on the idea of cold and warm air currents meeting, static electricity, and other natural forces. He holds that cold air from Grandfather mountain and warmer air from the south, moving in the triangular valley below Brown mountain, causes discharges of electricity and that makes the mysterious light which flares up, moves about, and puzzles scientists and others.
