Better Learn a Few Subjects Well. “Mr. John Graham, principal of Warrenton High School, recently made an address before the Teach ers’ Assembly on the teaching of fewer subjects in our schools. While this address was intended for teachers, there is much in it which will be of interest to the general public. He was among the first to advocate the establish ment of public high schools, al though he was then and still is en gaged in orivate high school work, which fact, together with his long experience as a teacher, gives real value to his judgment on the sub ject.” “It seems to us that it is far bet ter for the student to learn the rudiments well than to get a smat tering of many subjects. If a child is taught reading, spelling, writing, arithmetic and grammar thorough ly, for most of the ordinary affairs of life he will pass as well educat ed; but if he is deficient in these be is seriously handicapped, it matters not how many different subjects he has pretended to study. The school which lays soecial stress on a few important studies will send students to the colleges who will easily take first rank; and if they do not go to college they are well equipped for ordinary busi ness life.” We are much impressed with the truth of the above statements— and how few children of the pres ent day are taught these essentials; that is, taught thoroughly. Thor- X)ughness should be the watch-wor(^, and DO child should be allowed to merely “skim” over these things, but should know them and know them well, beyond any question, before being allowed to pass to more difficult studies. The man, woman or child who is able to read and read intelligent ly, has a vast world open to him, And is in fact in position to educate himself,, provided he has been taught to read understandingly. And to be able to spell well, and “cipher” are both equally as im- IK)rtant as reading. Political Notes. The Louisiana and Texas Pro gressives will all go back to the Democratic party. The Washington Moosers, under the leadership of Ole Hansoo, the Swede who was the Progressive candidate for the Senate two years ago, will support Wilson. Tammany Hall in a rousing Wil son ratification meeting predicts the re-election of the president. He will have the united support of all New York Democrats. W. R. Wilcox has been selected by candidate Hughes as campaign manager. He was at one time postmaster of New York. The bill of Representative Britt to allow an annual term of the ap pelate court at Asheville passed the House unanimously Saturday. Mr. Britt believes it will be made a law soon after it goes to the Senate. The bill has been report ed favorably, by the senate com mittee. Chautauqua Dates August 10-12. The dates for the Chautauqua which is to be held in Marion this summer will be August 10, 11 and 12. A very fine program has been arranged, and it is hoped that the Chautauqua this year will be muoh better than last year. It is very probable that the exercises will take place under a tent on the court house lawn. A full account of the programs will appear in next week’s issue of The Progress. Hay Bill Passes House. Washington, July 1.—The Hay bill appropriating $2,000,000 for dependent families of National Guardsmen called or drafted in the present emergency, was passed by the House today. The bill went to the Senate, allowing $50 per month to the dependent families, in discretion of the Secretary of War. In the cantaloupe belt of the eastern counties the growers this year will reap a harvest of cucum bers. They bought melon seed but the vines are “cukes” and the only way out of the pickle is to go into the pickle business this sea son, says a dispatch. The senate appropriates $150,- 000 for the reunion of blue and gray veterans in Vicksburg in Sep tember, 1917. The money goes to taking care of the soldiers who at tend. George Lee, of Asheville, repre sentative of the Aetna Life Insur ance company, was in Marion Mon day and paid a claim of $1,000 to Mrs. G. S. Tate in settlement of^a policy carried by her husband who died recently. VS (n (»> m w w VS m m m m 9S vs fUS vs vs m vs vs vs v\ vs vs vs vs (fS (n •ms JULY SPECIALS!
