A county agent in Massachu setts began in 1914 a demonstra tion in ttie renovation of some old apple orcliards. The follow ing year from a two acre orchard heavily infested with San Jose scale, when the demonstration 4* was begun, a net profit of $210.77 4* was realized after paying for spray materials, man and horse labor, 5 per cent interest on« the •h land, trees and working capital, taxes and all other expenses incd- dent to the proper management of the orchard. The net cost of developing 4- young orchards in the same •ir county has been reduced greatly by growing cash crops among the trees, as suggested by the county agent In the case of an eight acre young orchard the -h crop so grown in 1916 met all the 4* costs of the year properly charge- 4- able, besides paying for some permanent improvements, and lac^;ed only $10.88 of payliig for the trees, planting, etc. 4* ; 4* —:X' X .
