The federal reserve act, which measures up to the Progressive re quirements for '"the issue of cur rency” as a governmental function under a system whose control should be lodged with the govern ment and should be protected from domination or manipulation by Wall Street or by any special in terest. The good roads law, which ex tends federal aid to road building. The trade commission law, which fully satisfied the progressive de mand for a **strong federal admin istrative commission of high stand ing that shall maintain permanent, active supervision over industrial corporations engaged in interstate commerce.” An eight-hour law applying to work done for the government as well as work done by the govern ment. An eight-hour law applying to female employes in the District of Columbia, over which Congress has jurisdiction. An eight-hour provision for postoffice clerks and carriers. Measures abolishing the com merce court and authorizing the Interstate Commerce Commission to make a physical valuation of railroads. The Sherwood pension bill, which must meet the progressive idea of a “wise and just policy of pensioning American soldiers and sailors and their widows and child ren.” The parcel post law. Addition of 66,880 Acres to U. S. Forest Reserve. Washington, Aug. 23.—;Addi tion of 66,880 acres to the Govern ment’s forest reserves in the Ap palachian and White Mountains, bringing the total area purchased up to 1,396,367 acres, was an nounced tonight by the National Forest Reservation Commission. Fifty-nine tracts are comprised in the new acquisitions, the largest be ing in “Kilkenny purchase area,” in New Hampshire and covering 36,000 acres. About 17,000 acres are in the White Mountains, mak ing the total acquired there 698,086 acres. Smaller tracts were purchased in the Southern Appalachian Moun tains, the largest total on any area being that of 7,678 acres in Tran sylvania County, North Carolina, on the Pisgah Forest. Other tracts in Avery, Caldwell, Macon and McDowell Counties, North Caro lina, on the Boone, Nantahala and Mount Mitchell areas, aggregate 1,870 acres.
