For Senators, 33rd Senatorial ' District: CHARLES P. MATHESON of Alexander County. j; LEE NELSON of Caldwell County. For Member of House of Rep resentatives: MILES P. FLACK For County Treasurer: MILLARD F. POTEAT For Register of Deeds: E. L. C. GIBSON For Surveyor: JOHN C. ELLIOTT For Coroner: S. D.,HALLIBURTON For Sheriff: J. R. LEDBETTER For Commissioners: W. H. TAYLOR JAMES L. NICHOLS WILLIAM C. MORRIS As the county will not hold a fair this year it is suggested that McDowell have an apple show. What say you ? The New York Herald's straw vote Sunday showed a steady drift to President Wilsoir in 36 states. Hughes was losing slowly, the Herald said. The proper thing for the farmer to do is to keep something growing on his land all the time. This not only protects the land but at the same time will enrich it if the crops are properly rotated. The Democrats have selected a strong county ticket, and the Democratic party can go to the people this year with the utmost confidence. The men on the ticket are among our best citizens, they are men who have shown devotion to their county and to democracy. With Democracy united, as it is in McDowell at this time, and with a study pull for the ticket there will be a safe Democratic majority on November 7. A broad-minded man who ob serves closely recently remarked: “Crooked Creek, Broad River and Old Fort are the best townships in the county. When pressed for his reason for saying this he re plied that there was more of the spirit of co-operation there than elsewhere. Whether this be true or not, is it not a fact that the progress of any community de pends almost entirely upon the ability of the people to work to gether. If any one does not agree with the statement quoted above, we would like to hear from him and have his reason for thinking he has a better township. Crook ed Creek and Broad River certain ly did much free work on the roads ^ after the flood. Which 7 Hughes and four years of agita tion, conflict with Congress and doubt in business and industry; or Wilson and four years of develop ment along lines now defined, of cooperation with Congress, of cer tainty in business and industry *as to governmental policies. The one means probable loss of oar prosperity. The other con tains good assurance of continuing and increasing prosperity. President Wilson is entitled to re-election; he has earned reward by good service rendered. Hughes is not entitled to election; he has not shown either why Wilson should be put out or why he should be put in. Hughes has not even made a good Candidate; Wilson has made a good President. Take your choice. Put Democrats in Congress. Every man who votes for Wood row Wilson for President should vote for the Democratic candidates for Congress and for the Senate in his congressional district and btate. Woodrow Wilson’s candidacy to day rests upon his record of pro gressive achievement and its guar antee to complete this record by applying the new progressive laws fairly and efficiently. When you vote for Wilson you vote for his progressive policies and deeds. When you vote for members Of Congress, you should vote for men who (1) have voted for Wilson’s progressive policies and deeds and who (2) will vote in the House and Senate to support, carry out and carry on these pro gressive policies and deeds. It was a Democratic Congress that put through the Record of Achievement. Another Demo cratic Congress is absolutely neces sary to continue, apply and com plete the good work. Spare the Pigeons. Contributed. In Venice there is an ancient provision for the feeding of the pigeons. The execution of the provision is a pretty spectacle that all tourists wish to see. In the heart of New York City the pig eons are fed at noon each day in Madison Square. Pigeons are fa miliar in the prose and poetry of all nations and are universally dear to the imagination. We are confi dent that it is not by the will of our citizens, nor even by the well considered intent of the boys them selves that the pigeons of Marion have recently become a mark for the air rifle. Unsuspicious mem bers of our little flock have been brought down from the roofs of the ceurt house and neighboring buildings and have been torn to pieces by the first passing dog or cat. How about it, citizens? Rural Credits Law in a Nutshell. The rural credits law in brief provides: (1) That you may borrow one- half the value of your land; (2) That you may have from five to forty years to pay back the money, paying it back as fast as you please after five years; (3) That the interest rate can’t possibly exceed 6 per cent and will almost certainly be less; (4) That each borrower buys a $5 share in the National farm loan association for each $100 he bor rows, selling this back again when he pays up; (6) That all other liability is limited to 5 per cent of the amount a man borrows, there being no truth in the statement that he must assume general joint liability with other borrowers.
