SYNOD MEETS AT SALISBURY
Dr. Summerell of N«w Bern !•
elected Moderator at the 103rd
Session of Presbyterians.
Salisbury.—Dr. J. N. H. Summerell
of New Bern was elected moderator of
the North Carolina Presbyterian Sy
nod here. Three Charlotte men. Dr.
A. A. McQeachy and Elders J. B.
Ross and W. H. Belk were promi
nently mentioned in the nominations.
Strong pleas were made for addition
al funds to help much needed work
now being done by the church.
The one hundred and third session
was opened by the retiring modera
tor, Rev. Walter L. Lingle, of Union
Theological Seminary, Richmond, Va.,
with a sermon on “What is to be a
Christian.”
An address on “The Presbyterian
Standard” by Dr. J. R. Bridges, the
report on Christian education and
minsterial relief was read by Dr. W.
McC. White of Raleigh, and stirring
addresses on these causes were made
by Dr. H. H. Sweets of I^oulsville*
Ky., secretary of the General Assem*
bly’s Executive Committee, and Dr.
W. L, Lingle. Doctor Sweets thanked
this Synod for Its splendid roll of
candidates for the ministry, due large
ly to the work of Davidson College.
He pleaded also for a larger endow
ment fund for ministerial relief.
Last December this fund amounted
to $322,000. One of the North Caro
lina elders has agreed to raise this
to $400,000 if the whole church will
double his gift of $68,000 and thus
raise the total to over a half million.
After a very interesting report of
the year’s work by Dr. J. M. Wells
of Wilmington, an address on the fi
nancial as]^ects of the work was made
by Edwin F. Willis of Nashville,
Tenn., the treasurer of the assem
bly’s executive committee. Several
of the missionaries now on furlough
made appeals for their fields of la
bor. The Synod of North Carolina Is
the banner Synod of the church in its
generous support of this cause as its
contributions amount to more thaQ
$100,000 a year.
Statesville Boosts Home Products.
Statesville.—The inauguration of a
movement for a big “Made In States
ville” exhibit was the chief feature
of the meeting of the Merchants’ As
sociation. President A. W. Bunch had
worked out a tentative plan for the
exhibit which may be held about the
first of December.
The owners of the handsome new
building of the Lazanby Montgomery
Hardware Company nearing comple
tion have offered the association the
free use of the first floor for one week.
The plan is to decorate the show
room and allot space to each of the
Statesville manufacturers who desire
to display their goods, making a
charge for space suffident to bear
the actual expenses of the undertak
ing. After being allotted space, the
manufacturer could display his goods
in whatever manner he chose.
To Rebuild Bridges.
Hendersonville.—The constru^etion
of concrete bridges on the Horse
Shoe and Mills Hirer roads, whicb
were washed away by the flood, will
begin at once, according to a state
ment made by Supervisor P. F. Pat
ton, who was here from Oreenville.
These places have baen spanned since
July with temporary structures which
has resulted in great inconvenience
to traffic.

Moreover the Dog.
There was once a darkey who
had a dog which he named “More
over” and when asked where he
got the name he said he got it out
of the Bible; when asked to point
out the Scriptures from which he
got the name, he says, don’t you
remember in the story of Lazarus
where it says that “Moreover the
dog, came and licked Lazarus’
sores?”
