WashinstoD, Nov. 11—The week of May 28, has been definitely de cided upon as the time for holdiDg the 1917 reunion of the United CJonfederate veterans in this city, according to an announcement here tonight by H. F. Carey, chairman of the finance committee which has charge of the arrangements for en tertaining the veterans. Mr. Ca rey, who is general passenger agent of the Southern railway, also an> nounced that all of the railroads of the south have agreed to gite a one cent-a-mile rate for all visitors coming h«re to attend the reunion. Arden Farmer Kills Son-in-Law. Asheville, Nov. 10. — Charles Garren, a prosperous farmer Hying at Arden, shot and almost instant ly killed his son-in-law, Ottis Led better at Arden last mght. Gar ren appeared at the county jail tbis morning about six o’clock, an nouncing that he had shot his son- in-law and gave himself up. It is claimed that Garren was drinking and that he and Ledbetter got into argument regarding wheth er a certain automobile had passed through Arden. Confronted by the task of building a highway over a desert of constantly shifting sands, which in a few years might cover and render useless a road bed of macadam or concrete, the Cali fornia highway commission has intro duced a type of paving whl^h is porta ble, so that it can be easily moved to conform to the changing topography of the country. The Popular Mechanics Magazine describes the paving, which is made of plank, built In sections twelve feet long and eight feet wide, and hauled by wagons to the points whei*e it is needed. This Unusual thor oughfare extends six miles across a portion of the desert lying between Yuma, Arlz., and Holtville, Cal. The plank sections are built on 4 by 6 inch stringers. The units wfere bound to gether by iron strips placed over rows of s]>lkes, one on ^ther side and one along the center of the road. Round heated bolts running through the planks and the stringers were used to hold the strips down. Tlie latter, in addition to Joining the units together, keep the spikes from working out Good Work In Texat.
