J. W. WiNBOENE, Trustee. HROUGHOUT New Bogland, and especial- i iy in Maine, where, a study bj the forest service shows, balsam firs grow to best ad vantage, the annual cutting and shipment of this ideai CSiristmas tree Is an important early winter industry. Most of the hundreds of thousands of tinsel-covered trees that are set up each Christmas season In the homes of Boston, New STork and Philadelphia are balsam firs, and many of the selected specimens are even shipped from their places of growth to such cities as Baltimore, Washington, C!hicago and the cities of the middle West. The reason for the great popularity of the balsam fir as a Christmas tree is its symmetrical and practically per fect conical shape. That the aid of this Christmas tree par excellence in carrying out the cus tomary observance of Christmas may be had for a number of seasons yet is indicated by the report of the forest service, which estimates that the total stand ot balsam fir throughout its Chorokee ^nd|a^8 Get $36^000 Appropriations. Here’s The Way To Get It We Cordially Invite You to Join Our range of commercial occurrence in the United States is in the neighborhood of 5,000,000,000 board feet. In addi tion there is a largeV quantity in Can ada. There is a growing demand for the woods, however, for a variety of uses, and it is figured that something like 175,000,000 board feet are being cut in the United States annually. Many thousands of feet of this cut go to satisfy the Christmas demands. But it is not only as the burden bear er of gifts that the balsam fir contrib utes to Christmas observances: It also serves in less easily recognized forms. Its white, straight-grained wood has come to be used more and more in the manufacture of toys that hang from the branches of its yomger fellows and from the branches or the other evergreens that are widely used in many parts of the country. The wood of the balsam fir is used to a large extent, also, in the manufacture of| excelsior, of which thousands of tons i are used each holiday season for paclt- ing gifts that are sent by express and; malL Balsam fir is the source, too, ot the; wood from which are made many of j fty the food containers, such as fruit bas- kets and butter boxes, in which ma- terials for the Christmas dinner are brought to the market, the tasteless- •a\ ness of the wood making it unsur passed for such uses. Finally, the balsam fir is being increasingly used for the manufacture of paper, and this, wrapped around thousands of holiday packages, adds still another chapter to the list of the tree’s almost indispensable usefulness as a factor in Christmas observances. *««€*« '(0 9\ m 9\ •IS vs .Christmas Savings Club COMMENCING DECEMBER 18TH Offering an exceptional opportunity for you to accumulate a fund for Christmas or other uses. t IT’S FREEI NO FEESI NO FINES!
