Knit Goods $ Keep Warm. jj? Leather Shoes S Hi Time Here for Filing: Income Taxi Returns. From now until the bell rings on the night of March 15, the annual returns covering income for 1919 will be figured out and filed by citizens and residents, together with payments of tax due. The burden of fulfilling this ob ligation is laid by law squarely on the shoulders of. those who are American;- citizens" or residents. Every person must determine for himself whether his net income for 1919, figured according to the rev enue law, was sufficient in amount to require a return. If he is single, a return is re quired if his net income for 1919 was $1,000 or over. A widow pr widower is classed as a single per son. A man or woman Hvrng apart from his wife or husband is also classed as a single person. If he was married and living with his wife on December 31, a return is required if his net income for 1919 was $2,000 or over. In his net income he must include that of his wife and minor children, if any. If a tax is due on his income, he must make payment with his re turn. This payment may be made in whole or in part of the tax due. At least one quarter of the tax must accompany the return. The filing and paying must be done before midnight of March 15, or be is classed as a delinquent and is subject to severe penalties. Twy forms are bein distributed for personal returns. Form 1040 A intended for use by a person whose net income does not exceed $5,000. A larger form, 1040, is intended for each person having a net in come in excess of $5,000. Both of these forms are now obtainable at internal revenue offices and at some banks and post offices. It is urged by the internal reve nue bureau that taxpayers obtain their blanks at once, failure to have a blank form at hand for an eleventh hour return will Dot re lieve a person of penalty for fail ure to comply with the law. Each form contains instructions for preparing and filing the return, and these should be carefully read and strictly observed. There is also provided a "work sheet" which should be used for making original computations, and which should be retained and pre served by the taxpayer. Any person who is in doubt on points affecting his particular case, should bring such matters to the attention of the nearest deputy col lector or revenue agent, who will render very ntecessary aid withaut charge. When the return is completed, it should be properly executed and immediately filed. Any internal revenue officer will administer the necessary oath without charge. The Automobile. Reports from Raleigh show that there are now 109,000 cars in North Carolina. An automobile is a luxury and now that all people have money the want of an auto mobile is their first luxury. And the car is here to stay. People now want some fast method of transportation. They want to go to their destination without delay, and the automobile offers the best means of transportation for these purposes. . The car is here to stay, and is now one of the greatest fac tors in the advancement of civili zation. Concord Tribune. To the Dyspeptic. Fritz, resigned,; as president of Lenoir College, Hickory. : i Mrs, Mary Carv, ' o f Bu ncom be county, has been awarded $150 for damage to her flock of sheep" by dogs. Col. John S. Cunningham of Durham, has been appointed as assistant to Col. T. H. Vanderford, prohibition enforcement officer of North Carolina. The local school authorities of Fuquay Springs, Wake county, have closed the school in that dis trict on account of mild epidemic of influenza. This is the first in stance in which the return of the epidemic has been deemed sufficient cause for alarm that the schools were closed. Mr. Bryan Take Fling at Chairman Cummings. Speaking in Richmond, Va., Wednesday, Wm. J. Bryan took a fling at Homer Cummings, nat ional Democratic chairman. Mr. Bryan declared that Mr. Cummings must either separate from Gov. El wards, of New Jer sey, or resign as bead of the Dem ocratic party. "Tne Democratic partv is too near to me to ever consent to have its interests allied with those of the liquor interest," said Bryan. 4If I am elected a delegate to the national convention and my State instructs me to vote for Mr. Edwards, I would refuse to serve. I won't join with Mr. Edwards in trying to turn the Democratic par ty over to the liquor interests. If the chairman," said Mr. Bryan, referring to Mr. Cum nrngs, hasn't sense enough to know better than to join in boom for a candidate like that, he hasn't sense enough to be on the com mittee." Mr. Bryan said that the liquor interests were going to take the fight against the nation-wide pro hibition into politics and try to elect a lwet" President od a "wet" platform. He announced that he could brine evidence to this effect. Dogs vs, Wildcats. If we have 1,300 dogs in McDow ell county and only 300 sheep, there must be some reason why the dog is a more favorite animal than the sheep with our population. The dog, of course, is blamed for the scarcity of sheep. I have been keepiug some sheep fur the past 32 years and have not lost one by a dog yet. For some years I only kent one small dog, but the wildcats got so brave that one spring they killed all my lambs. What they didn't devour they covered up with leaves by old logs" and stumps about the pas ture. They also carried off pigs in broad daylight. Butiall that stop ped after I secured me two large dogs to keep away the minks and foxes from the fowls. The sheep industry should be encouraged, as there is plenty of waste land over the county suitable for sheep pasture. The greatest problem in sheep raising is fencing. Barbwire is not suitable, as it plucks the wool from the sheep and and occasionally one will get fastened and probably die before it is found. I keep about ten ewes for breed ing and they pay rae-yery well every year in wool and lambs. The pasture is enclosed with rail fence and barbwire on the mountain. E. A. Kikstein.
