SOME MEASURES SUGGESTED 8t An ding Plants Along Fences and in Waste Places Should Be Burned Over and Fields Cultivated During Winter Season. (Prepared by the United States Depart ment of Agriculture.) Thousands of dollars can be saved annually by fighting the chalcis fly in the districts where alfalfa seed and clover seed are grown, although it can not be hoped to eradicate this pest from any seed-producing locality. This is stated as a result of investiga tions conducted by the bureau of en tomology. Control Measure Suggested, The rapid dispersion of the adults of this species makes it vitally impor tant that control methods should be taken up by community action rather than by the Individual. The following control measures are suggested : Standing alfalfa and red-clover plants along fence lines and waste areas should be burned over in au tumn to destroy hibernating larvae. Cultivation of alfalfa seed fields during the winter is of much value in covering the infested alfalfa seeds containing hibernating larvae. Whenever possible, the alfalfa seed grower should do most of his irrigat ing in early spring, or before the seed crop is grown. Every farmer in an alfalfa seed growing district should cut all of the standing alfalfa along fence lines, ! ditch banks, and other waste areas at the time of cutting a hay crop and be fore a seed crop is grown. Hay crops should be cut carefully so that no stems will remain standing Mian0: have given lis For the great reception you "Yours Truly" and Thomas A. Edison's Masterpiece 66 cfloseoir Tine New E "The Three Million Dollar Phonograph" The Phonograph with a Soul." We had set a mark for our first years business. But our first weeks business, with our incomplete stock has exceed ed our average weekly estimate for the year. A Heart to Heart Talk. I have traveled extensively and have been a ,4tar heel" for 21 years. In fact the tar is so thick it will never wear off. For some years since the "Clinchfield" came through I have had my eye on Marion, and have passed through Marion many times without stopping. In March I came here and gave it the ' 'once over," and decided thathis was the place with a future. I do not see the Main street of today with its lit tle one-story holes in the walls, but the greater Marion of five years from today. Get out your kodak and snap Main street. Open your eyes five years from today and see if "yours truly" is not a prophet. Not a fly ''between scenes" concern. We have been asked many times, how long will you be here? Unless our present plans are changed, it will be until the roll is called up yonder. Even if I pass on, there will always be an "Edison Shop" in Marion. I nave taken a special course in repair ing Edisons." We are going to have a fine parlor as soon as it is built. Our stock of records will be second to none in the State. Come in and see us, we will tell you all. Miss Freida Hemphel sings at Asheville May 17. If you can't go come in and hear her wonder ful "Recreations." Many hundreds have already made "The Edison Shop" their stopping place. We want the rest of you to do so. Animals Render Valuable Service. Horses, cattle and sheep may ren der valuable service by destroying plants that have escaped the mower. All seed fields should be handled sc that a heavy setting of pods will b secured with the first bloom and the crop will be removed from the field ae early as possible. Attempts to grow second crops ol alfalfa seed in a single season will meet almost certain, failure because of the increased abundance of chalcis flies late in the summer. It is a mistake to pasture alfalfa seed fields which have become too se verely infested to field a crop worth harvesting. Live stock walking through the ripe alfalfa cause th seeds to be shelled out, and those in fested with the hibernating larvae of the chalcis fly fall on the ground, where they become the source of In festation the following year.
