Thori arc mnnv fnrms on which It Is not practicable to haul Time. In j such cases alsike may be used, alone j If the land is low and poorly drained, j or mixed with red clover on the aver- i age worn farm on which red clover often fails. Alsike will not yield as well as red clover will under favor able conditions but it will catch and make something on many soils on which red clover would fall. It will stand a "sour" soil better than red clover will. Sweet clover will not thrive with out lime. There is no use trying It. But given lime it will grow on poorer land than any other crop to improve such land. Sweet clover can be han dled in a rotation the same as reff, the seed is cheaper and in many places it may weU take the place of red clover while the latter seed Is so expensive. For full information about the culture of sweet clover ask the United States department of agri culture for Farmers' Bulletin 797. LIME CONTROLS CLUB ROOT From 10 to 80 Bushels Per Acre Are Required to Completely Destroy the Disease. Club root of cabbage may be con trolled by heavy applications of lime on the infected soil. From 10 to 80 bushels of limestone per acre are re quired to completely destroy the dis ease. Club root also attacks cauli flower, particularly when grown on soil infected with the club root of cabbage. The lime applied to con trol the disease is also effective 1b sweetening the soil, thus resulting in a greater crop Increase. REAL SOUTH NOT OPPOSED TO SUFFRAGE Mrs. Josephus Daniels of North Carolina, wife of the Secretary of the Navy, says it will be a pity if the men of her state do riot ratify the Federal Suffrage Amendment, as it would be the first break in their reputation for giving women what they want. "No class of women has ever been considered more of the clinging vine than the women of the south," said Mrs. Daniels. "No class of women has ever been more protected, yet in times of national stress, southern worn-, en always have risen to the occasion and proved themselves more than equal to their responsibilities." FOR THE SAKE OF THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY. Apropos to the fact that the women j of thirty states in th? Union are going to vote for the next President, whether the thirty-srxth state ratines the Fed eral suffrage amendment or not, Mrs. Charles D. Mclver of Greensboro has this to say "for the sake of the Demo cratic party :" "Why cut down the popular vote in North Carolina by denying North Car olina women the right to vote for Pres idential elector along with the women j of other states. True, a state's electo ral college vote is no bigger no matter how much the popular vote is in creased, but it's Just as true that there is a psychological factor in the larger DODular vote that has its effect. It doesn't do the Democratic party any ! good to seem to be the party of a Tew people instead of many people. Of the thirty states where women will vote In th presidential election of 1920 the popular vote Is nominally Republican in two-thirds of them. With the wo men voting in those states the popular vote on the Republican side is increas ed by millions. In the Democratic South millions of women are excluded and the popular vote correspondingly reduced. It makes a bad appearance ob the face of things. It creates the Impression that the Republican partj Is the people's party. It lsn t. xne Democratic party is the people's party It's unfair to create this faise impres sion by an exclusion of the womal vote in the South at the expense of thi Democratic party t - NOTICE!
