A WEEKLY NEWSPAPER DEVOTED TO THE BEST INTEREST OF THE PEOPLE OF McDOWEll- TOUNTY, ESTABLISHED 1896. MARION, N; C.f THURSDAY, APRIL 7, 1921 VOL. XXV NO. 31 COUNTY BOARD OF EDUCATION IN SESSION "T. W. Stacy Re-elected Chair man N". F. Steppe Re-elected County Superintendent. The County Board of Education met in regular session at the 'office of the County Superintendent Mon- day." Under- the new law the board TPorni2es in Anril instead of Jnlv. :as formerly. . Mr. T.. W. Stacy was re-elected chairman of the, board." . A number. of petitions were. filed, asking for school buildings and other.. "matters. The '- county superintend ept and chairman were appointed a committee to investigate tne condi tions in the old Tom's Creek chapel and make recommendation to the 'State Department. The - county su perintendent was also instructed to investigate the school conditions in -Higgins township and report at a subsequent meeting. Under the law, the County Board of Education can not create new school districts' with less than sixty-five children and con taining less than twelve square miles of territory, and in no event can the board create a new district in case it increases the number of districts in jthe .county. The object of this law is to encourage consolidation rather than creating so many small schools. Large, central schools, where the school can be well organized, are thought to be better than so many .smaller schools with poor equipment and o"f ten times inefficient teachers.
