MARION PROGRESS. MARION, N. C.. THURSDAY, JUNE 6, 1929 JUNE BUGS ARE EXPECTED IN VERY LARGE NUMBERS A widespread epidemic of June bugs is predicted for this year by scientists connected with the New York botanical garden. These large brown or greenish beetles appear periodically. The in sects spend years as white grub ■\yorms crawling beneath the ground, and eating the roots of grass. When they are ready to reproduce, they emerge as winged June bugs their eggs, and soon die. Mr. Finch has only a five acre farm, and two acres of this is given over to his chickens, the cow and the pasture, an orchard, as well as about 12 stands of bees. We will lay I probably not find many such two j acres in McDowell county that is pro- I ducing more than these two acres of land. Mr. Finch bought 1000 S. C. I White Leghorn chicks this spring, and his son, Roy, purchased about 300 of the same variety. J. L. Morgan sowed 40 acres of Korean Lespedeza seed this spring. He sowed several acres last year and was well pleased with the results. He likes it as a grazing crop for cattle and hogs, as well as for soil improv ing purposes. He stated that he be lieved that it was hard to find a bet ter plant for soil impFOvement pur poses when all the advantages of the Korean Lespedeza were considered. Rev. J. C. Story says that R. L. Greenlee has three acres of the fin est Irish potatoes that he has ever seen. This is a “patch” that “Uncle Bob” is doing his very best to see how many bushels of potatoes he can make per acre and the cost per bushel. Mr. Greenlee got all the in formation he could get from and through the office of County Agent and hopes to be able to make this a fine demonstration for all the far mers of McDowell county on “Grow ing Irish Potatoes Profitable in Mc- i Dowell County". This demonstration ; is on his farm in “Turkey Cove”, or I Woodlawn. ( E. D.
