FAVORS BILL
FOR FEDERAL AID
TO ALL SCHOOLS
Members of the Mainon high school
Parent-Teachers association went on
record at their meeting in the school
here Monday in favor of the Black-
Harrison bill, providing for the es
tablishment of more uniform stand
ards and federal aid in the schools
of the nation. The motion was car
ried that a letter be addressed to
Representative Weaver showing the
stand of the association on the bill.
The bill is now before Congress.
Mrs. Garland Williams, principal
of the Eugene Cross school in Mc
Dowell county, explained the provis
ions in the bill and stated that North
Carolina would derive benefits from
the passage of the bill because of the
high birth rate in the state and the
low expenditure for each school
child.
Various groups oppose the pro
posed legislation because of the race
situation in the South, and the fear
of too much federal control, she said.
Such fears are ungrounded, she said,
for the money provided for schooFs
by the bill would be handled by the
states and would supplement state
appropriations for schools. She listed
various national organizations of im
portance that had gone on record as
favoring the bill.
H. C. Holland, principal of theMar-
ion high school, addressed the par
ents briefly, urging their cooperation
in keeping children in school.
