TORNADO DOES SOME
DAMAGE AT VALDESE
Valdese, Aug. 13. — A tornado
struck the outskirts of Valdese Mon-
ilay during a rainstorm, resulting in
considerable property damage. No
one was reported injured or killed.
Persons close at hand at the time
«f the tornado described it as a low,
dark moving cloud, about the size of
a typical five-room house.
The tornado struck two houses
and damaged a number of trees in
its half-mile long path. At the house
•f Willis Burns, a front porch was
Cfted away and an apple tree wa^
aaoved 100 feet. Parts of the porch
vere ripped off the house of Paul
Evans, but potted plants remained on
the porch undisturbed. A portion of
tte roof was lifted from its place.
Occupants said curtains on the win
dows were “sucked up through the
opening” left by the rising roof. A
walnut tree in the vicinity was shat
tered. As the tornado made its way
«ver a ridge and away from Val
dese, tops of trees were damaged.
The tornado struck about 3 o’clock
in the afternoon.

“Contrary to popular belief, the

the skin and. imbed its entire body.
The mite apparently feeds upon the
upper layer of the skin after this
tissue has been dissolved by a sub
stance which the chigger injects in
to the skin. It is the effect of this
substance which causes the intense
itching associated with the attack of
this annoying mite.
“After the chigger has become
engorged with food it loosens its
hold and falls off.”
