Social News Miss Elizabeth Whitten, Editor °ne 64 Residence 59-X Greenlee Chapter DAR Has December Meet The Greenlee Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolu tion met Friday evening at the home of Mrs. Harold Dysart in Greenlee. The home was beautifully decorated with holly, a Christmas tree and colored lights. Mrs. S. F. Mauney, regent, will by virtue of her office be a dele gate to the Continental Congress to meet in Washington, D. C. next April and Miss Lenoir Dula was elected as a delegate. Alternates elected are Miss Kate Frisbie and Mrs. Myrtle Chaney. In addition, Mrs. Lester Dawkins, of Hickory, and Miss Lenoir Dule were elected delegates to the State Convention to be held in Asheville on March 1, 2 and 3. Miss Nina Greenlee, Mrs. J. B. Johnson and Miss Gertrude Dula were elected alternates. Mrs. Odell Trexle* was elected a page. Mrs. Dawkins presented a pro gram on the customs and celebra tions of Christmas throughout the world. o New Year's Party At McCall Home Dorothy Jo McCall entertained with a New Year's Eve party at her home last Friday evening. Seasonal decorations gave a fes tive note to the occasion. Games were -played and prizes awarded in several contests. Punch, cookies and candy were served. The guest list included Jane Brad ford, Pat Shiflet, Roxanne Dark, B-Linda Finley, Harriet James and Beverly Duncan, of Leeds, S. C. o Holiday Dance Miss Adeline Neal was hostess to about 80 guests with a dance at the Marion Lake club Thursday evening. The ballroom was decorated in keeping with the holiday season. R. Perkins, president of the Marion Junior Woman's club, ap pointed the following nominating i committee at the meeting Tuesday evening: Mrs. E. W. Parker, Jr., Mrs. George Howe and Mrs. M. S. Laughridge, Jr. Mrs. E. D. Braly read a report of the North Carolina Club Woman. A letter from Mrs. J. F. Snipes, chair man of the Red Cross Service to Camps and Hospitals, was read. In response to a statement regarding needs of Moore General and Oteen hospitals, the club voted to aid Oteen during the month of April by mail ing one case of cigarettes and one case of matches to veteran patients. Mrs. Charles H. Smith, Mrs. S. R. Perkins and Mrs. Albert Neal were hostesses. New Year's Party At Barnes Home Mrs. Louise Barnes and Mrs. M. W. Pryor entertained with a New Year's party last Friday evening at their home on North Madison street. Holiday decorations formed a colorful background for three tables of contract. Mrs. M. D. Atwell won high score and slam prizes. Mrs. William Gladden won second high. The hostesses served a salad and sweet course. Others playing were Mrs. A. W. Grayson, Mrs. R. W. Atwell, Mrs. G. W. Kirkpatrick, Mrs. Carl McCall, Mrs. Ben Martin, Mrs. Robert Landis and Miss Effie Hicks. o Junior Women Sponsor Dance The Marion Junior Woman's club held a New Year's Eve dance at the Marion Lake club last Friday even ing. Windows were decorated with candles and evei-green. In the center of the room a cluster of balloons was suspended from the ceiling. Only members and their guests were present. Punch was served during intermission. Linda Parker Hostess At Theatre Party Linda Parker was hostess to seven of her friends with a theatre party last Saturday in celebration of her seventh birthday. After the movie the following guests adjourned to the drug store for refreshments: Martha Pyatt, Patricia Hewitt, Peggy Perkins, Becky Adkins, Eloise Hewitt, Twin ker Maun&y and Jane Hollis. Teen-Age Club To Have Dance The Teen-Age club will be enter tained with a semi-final dance Sat urday evening, J. B. Walker, Jr., director, announced yesterday. The dance was scheduled for last Saturday evening and was post poned until this wek. Methodist Women To Meet Tonight The Woman's Society of Christian Service and the Wesleyan Service Guild will hold a joint meeting at the Methodist Hut at 7:30 p. m. Thursday evening, January 6. Men-of-the-Church To Meet January 19 i The Men-of-the-Church organiza tion of the First Presbyterian church will meet at 7 p. m., Wednesday, ' January 19, Carl Whiteside, presi i dent, announced this week. State Alumni Officers Elected The McDowell County Chapter of N. C. State College alumni elected the following- officers at a meeting held at Sunset Restaurant Tuesday: B. C. Nave, president; William Greenlee, vice president; Carl White side, secretary-treasurer. During the business session Whiteside made a report of the needs of N. C. State College as outlined in a recent sur vey. Other alumni members present were T. L. Richie, W. E. Carter, James McCall and J. B. Laughlin, Jr. Student guests present were Bill Alley, Bruce McNeill, Bill Flack and Watson English. Members voted to hold the next meeting in March. PATTON ABOARD THE U. S. S. CABOT J. W. Patton, chief machinist's mate, U.S.N., son of T. C. Patton of Marion, N. C., is serving aboard the aircraft carrier U.S.S. Cabot with the Atlantic fleet. The Cabot is the first capital ship to be taken out of moth balls and be placed into active service. Patton, who entered the Naval service Jan. 16, 1940, received his recruit training at the Naval Train ing Station, Norfolk, Va. Before entering the Navy, he was graduated from Pleasant Gardens high school. Marilyn Brinkley Wins Canning Award Marilyn Brinkley canned more I than 1,000 quarts of food last year and won the $25 cash award for canning more than any girl under 114 years of age in the Western Dis trict, Miss Jean Steele, home demon | stration agent, announced Mtonday. i Miss Brinkley is the daughter of Mrs. E. B. Wright. The donation was made by the Savannah Sugar company. j American Legion Meet Postponed ! Walden has resigned as pastor of the Old Fort Baptist church to accept appointment as assistant professor of religion at Wake Forest college.
