Social News Miss Elizabeth Whitten, Editor Office Phone 64 Residence 59-X Tea Honors Native Of McDowell On Her Ninetieth Birthday A dainty little lady blew out the candles on her ninetieth birthday and wished she would live to be a hundred. The occasion was a tea given Tuesday by Mrs. J. W. Streetman, Sr. honoring Mrs. James Morris on her ninetieth birthday. ••Miss Mamie", as she is affection ately known to her friends, greeted about 50 guests between the hours of four and five. She remembered to ask each of them about their own friends, relatives, hobbies, or what ever their interest might be and oc cassionally turned to ask those pre siding where some particular friend could be and why she had not al ready arrived at the birthday party. The pink and white dining room decorations were as quaint and del icate as the little eighty pound lady herself. The table was covered with a white linen cloth and centered with a silver tray of pink camellia blossoms, flanked by pink candles in silver holders. China and burning tapers in crystal candelabra were arranged on the mantel. Mrs. J. W. Streetman, Sr. and Mrs. Fred Streetman received guests at the door and Mrs. G. W. Kirk patrick directed them to the dining room. Mrs. L. A. Neal and Mrs. B. A. Dickson, presiding at the din ing table were assisted in serving by Mrs. M. S. Laughridge, Sr., Mrs. Lawrence Miller, and Mrs. R. E. McCall. Mrs. J. W. Streetman, Jr. received m the hall. Sandwiches, cake, salted nuts, candy and tea were served. "Miss Mamie" proudly, but grate fully, surveyed the nylon hose, note paper, gift soap, cut flowers and other lovely gifts. Then carefully straightening her shoulder corsage she said, "why it's been even better than I thought it would be." She smiled her sweetest as she bade her guests a fond adieu with words of appreciation for the gifts and a cordial invitation to come and visit her. Out-of-town guests present were Mrs. S. L. Burgin and Mrs. J. P. Morris of Rutherfordton; Mrs. Fred Streetman of Hendersonville. Mrs. Morris, native of McDowell county, is the widow of the late Mr. James Morris, veteran of the Civil War, Mayor of Marion for a period of six years and McDowell county's representative in the 1896 State Legislature. For several years he was a U. S. Commissioner. In June, 1929 they celebrated their golden wedding anniversary and were hon MRS. JAMES MORRIS ored with a reception at the home of Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Stretman, Sr. Miss Arrowood Weds W. J. Minnish Miss Mattie Arrowood and W. J. Minnish were united in marriage on Saturday, January 22, at the home of the bride with Rev. C. F. Dyson officiating. The bi-ide is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Will Seagle of Marion and the bridegroom is the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Wiley Minnish. The ceremony was performed in the presence of a few intimate friends. La Nuit Club Meets At Morris Home La Nuit club members and two visitors were entertained Math a dessert-bridge at the home of Mrs. W. L. Morris last Thursday evening. Mrs. G. W. Giles won club high i score prize and Mrs. E. P. Dameron, visitor's high. Potted plants were used as decoration. Others playing were Mrs. A. S. Bradford, Mrs. Sara Margaret Giles, Mrs. C. C. Ben Carson President Of College Class Ben Carson, of Rutherfordton and former resident of Marion, has been elected president of the Junior class of Stetson University, DeLand, Flor ida. He is the son of Mrs. J. M. Carson and the late Mr. Carson. While at Stetson Ben has served as Freshman Advisor, as a repre sentative to reform the Stetson student body consifcution, as vice chairman of the Freshman rules committee. Ben is also a member of the business staff of the Stetson Yearbook, The Hatter, the Inter national Relationship club, the Young Democrats of America, the Debating club, the Executive coun cil of the Stetson student associa tion, the Pi Cappa Phi social fra ternity, in which he has served as president of his pledge class and is at present Rush chairman. This winter Ben will finish ,his re quired work for an A. B. degree in Economics. He plans to enter law school next fall. QUESTIONNAIRES MAILED The McDowell County Draft Board is piailing out 1,400 question naires this week to registrants who are fathers and veterans. Want ads get quick results. Film To Be Shown At St. Matthew's " Messenger of Peace", a relig ious film 90 minutes in length, will be shown at St. Matthew's Lutheran Church on Sunday evening at 7:30. A free will offering will be received, and everyone is welcome. John Beale plays the leading role as "Pastor Ritter." The film be gins in the seminary and continues with the life of the pastor in the j parsonage and in the congregation al. activities. The film is one of a series done under the auspices of the Interna tional Lutheran Laymen's League. "Messenger of Peace" is dedicated by these laymen to the ministry: "To the heroic men of God wh» serve on every Christian front."
