Marion Progress office, 125 South Main St. tf | I , j A small advertisement in our col- | iimns often returns large dividends j Local Musicians Attend Band Clinic Five members of the local high school band were selected to repre sent Marion in the Western All-State Band Clinic held at Salisbury last Friday and Saturday, February 18 and 19. The band clinic is a yearly affair with students selected by a ] committee appointed by the North Carolina Bandmasters Association. Marion musicians participating in the clinic were: Hilda Goodman, flute, Sewell Laughridge, clarinet, Mary Belle Grayson-bass clarinet, Bobby Ricks, french horn, and Dean Seagle, trombone. The Clinic Band was conducted by James Christian Pfohl, Director fo Music at Davidson College. The two day clinic schedule called for some strenuous band rehearsals but also included a banquet on Friday night with a dance following at the | Salisbury Youth Center. Saturday's : activities included a clarinet dem onstration by Allen Hadley Bone, Director of Band and Orchestra at Duke University, a very fine con cert by the Davidson Band in the afternoon and a concert by the Clinic Band Saturday night. Students report both an instruc tive and enjoyable trip. The stu dents were accompanied to Salis bm-y by Bernard Hirsch, local band director. I - ■ Dobson Accepted At Emory University Charles W. Dobson, route 2, Ne bo, has been accepted by the Emory University School of Dentistry, ac cording to an announcement by Dr. John E. Buhler, dean of the school. Dobson will be one of a class of 80 beginning next September. The group is made up entirely of stu dents from the Southeastern area. To qualify for acceptance, a stu dent must have two years of pre dental college training with a com mendable record, and must take a series of aptitude tests similar to those given by the council on dental education of the American Dental Association. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Cecil B. Dobson of Nebo. Wildlife Club To Meet Friday A call meeting of the McDowell County Wildlife club is slated for 7:30 p. m., Friday, in the court house, it is announced this week. The meeting was called to con sider certain legislation regarding wildlife laws and regulations which is pending in the current session of the State Legislature. The discussion will be mainly concerned with laws regarding big game hunting, fishing licenses and trespassing. It was pointed out that a bill is being proposed to the Assem bly which would give land own ers the right to protect their lands from trespassing. Land owners are urged to be present and express their opinions re garding this bill. Hewitt Speaker At Rotary Meet i Rev. Kenneth Hewitt, of Konna rock, Virginia, addressed the Ma rion Rotary club on "Mountain Mis sionaries," at its meeting Frid&y. He told of the 22 mountain congrega tions he works with in Virginia. Morris Schwartz, of St. Louis, was the guest of C. H. Smith. Announcement was made that Ladies' Night will be observed Mar ch 25. Miss Ruth Taylor Speaks In Brevard > Miss Ruth Taylor, director of ed ucation at the First Methodist Church, has been invited to speak at the World Student Service obser vance which is held annually on the campus of Brevard College. Miss Taylor spoke at the vesper service on Wednesday and will speak again at the chapel program today. She will discuss the needs of students of the world as she observ ed them on her tour through Europe last summer. Baptist Attendance Reported Good The First Baptist Church has made a very fine record in attend ance during the past two months, Rev. M. O. Owens, Jr., the pastor announces. Since January 1, the Sunday School has averaged 319 in attendance, and the Training Union has averaged 124 in Attend ance. A new Adult Union has been added to the Training Union, and a week of study held with an av erage attendance of 97 for the week. Donkey Basketball, Game Scheduled Coach Art Ditt has announced plans for a donkey basketball game in the Marion High School gym nasium on March 14. Those taking part will include C. C. Elledge, Marion High School principal; Harry Tyler, Charles Smith, Matt McBrayer, principal of West Marion School, Junior Simp son, Jack Goode, Earl Black and Art Ditt. Several of Marion's outstanding athletes are being asked to ioin this all-star team in a bouc with Marion High School under sponsor jship of the Marion High School | Athletic association. Miss Creasy Wins Honor Miss Betty Jo Creasy, daughter of Mrs. C. W. Browning of Clinchfield and a member of the Marion High ! School Basketball team received an outstanding honor when she was selected by the Valdese Gold Medal Basketball Tournament officials to appear as maid of honor and vie for the laurels as queen of the Tourna ment Saturday Night, February 19, at Valdese. Miss Creasy is a member of the senior class and is playing her third year of basketball with the Ripper ettes. She will receive a gold basket ball. Ernest Duncan In Sub-Artie Games Earnest R. Duncan, seasan, USN, son of J. Arnold Duncan of Route 4, Marion, is participating in sub-arc tic war games in Alaskan waters while serving aboard the aircraft carrier USS Boxer with the Pacific Fleet. The Boxer has been designated flagship of the striking and covering force for the exercises, which will continue through the month of Feb ruary. Miss Wilkerson On Tournament Team Miss Beatrice Wilkerson, daught er of Mr. and Mrs. L. D. Wilkerson, has been elected on the All-Tourna ment team at Valdese.
