Social News Miss Elizabeth Whitten, Editor Office Phone 64 Residence 59-X Miss Todd To Wed John W. Wellman The marriage of Miss Donna Mae Todd, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Rusk Todd, of Lanadowne, and John Wilson Wellman, son of Rev. and Mrs. Henry M. Wellman, of Marion, N. C., will take place on Saturday, June 11, at half after four o'clock in the afternoon, at St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church, Lansdowne, Pennsylvania. Rev. Maurice Cortner, rector of St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church, and Rev. Henry H. Well man, father of the groom will per form the ceremony. Miss Jeanne Trostel, of Lans downe, Pennsylvania will be maid of honor and bridesmaids will be Kiss Emma French, of Woodstock, Virginia, and Miss Jane Leitch, of Richmond, Virginia. Claude Long, of Astula, Florida, will act as best man. The ushers will include Ronald Briggs, of Naytom, Ohio, Elbert Wade of Winston-Salem, and Clin ton Idutte, of Newark, New Jersey. A reception will follow the cere mony at The Twentieth Century Club, Lansdowne, Pennsylvania. o Presbyterian Executive Board Has Meeting The Executive Board of the First Presbyterian Women of the Church met Monday night at the home of Mrs. B. F. Pollard with Mrs. Mar shall Dark as co-hostess. Fifteen members were present. The evening's devotional was con ducted by Mrs. Paul Story, presi dent. j The budget for the coming year was discussed and adopted. Propor tionate amounts were assigned the five circles. Mrs. Story reported on the Pres- J byterial held at Concord April 22, and attended by Mrs. Story, Miss Cora Cochran and Mrs. B. A. Dick- ^ son, delegates. Others attending were Miss Jean Maxwell, Miss Carolyn Johnson and Mrs. B. F. Pollard. Following the closing prayer, the hostesses served refreshments. Methodist Youths To Have Festival j Methodist youths of the Sub-dis trict of McDowell county will spon sor a Folk Festival at 7:30, Friday evening, in the community build ing. Young people are to come dressed in folk costumes of the hills of North Carolina or costumes from other countries. A program of folk games will be directed b$ Miss Ruth Taylor, edu cational director. Griffin Speaker At D. A. R. Meeting An address entitled "What Makes North Carolina a Great State," was given by Clarence Griffin, of Forest City, at the regular meeting of the Martha Pettigrew chapter of the Daughters of tfc* American Revolu tion last Thursday. The speaker is author of "History of Old Tryon and Rutherford Counties," secre tary-treasurer of Rutherford Coun ty Publishing company, member of the Board of Directors of the North Carolina Department of Archieves and History for the past 12 years. Illustrating his address with a map of North Carolina, the speaker said the early settlers in North Car olina came of their own free will so they might have religious free dom and because of the opportu nities afforded for material gain. He attributed the growth and de velopment of the State to the fact that the settlers were the type of people who came to the State with a purpose. The speaker was introduced by Miss Doris Hill. Mrs. R. J. Noyef vice president, presided. A report of the National D. A. R. Conference held in Washington in April was given by Mrs. J. F. Jonas and the re solutions passed at the conference were read. Members of the Greenlee Chap ter D. A. R. and Mrs. Daniel Bris coe, Jr., of Knoxville, Tenn., house guest of Mrs. Joseph L. Noyes, were guests. Mrs. W. R. Chambers, hostess, served refreshments. The bride is the daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Fred J. Seaver of New York and Winter Park, Florida. The bridegroom is the son of Mrs. Julius Early Blackmon and the late Mr. Blackmon of Lancaster, S. C. Miss Clara Justice Elected Treasurer Of Salem Committee Announcement was made at Salem College, Winston-Salem, this week of the members of the I. R. S., social standards committee, who will serve next year. The new treasurer of the organi zation is Miss Clara Justice, the daughter of Dr. and Mrs. G. B. Jus tice of Marion. Miss Justice is a member of the rising junior class at Salem, and belongs to the Lablings (science club) and the Spanish Club. The letters I. R. S. stand for I Represent Salem, and the Council acts to promote in each student the high ideals and high personal stand ards for which Salem stands, ac cording to a statement made by I. R. S. president Carolyn Dunn of Kinston. o Sunday School Losers Entertain Winners The winners in an attendance contest of the Daughters of Susan na Wesley Class were entertained by the losing side Wednesday even ing in the Hut with 45 members and guests present. Mrs. Joseph Pyatt, Jr. was in charge. Mrs. Frances K. Crawley and Miss Gladys Davis composed the welcoming committee and the wor ship service was led by Mrs. J. C. Rabb. Mrs. Joseph Pyatt conducted the games, and prizes were won by Mrs. D. Pat Davis and Mrs. Rowe Maun ey. After refreshments were serv ed, Mrs. L. D. Adkins led group sing ing. In addition to class members, those included in the guest list were Mrs. James B. McLarty, Mrs. Rowe Mauney, Mrs. Virgie Camron, Miss Helen Hester, Miss Ruth Nelson and Mrs. Annie Miller Pless. o Study Club Meets Tuesday The Study Club met Tuesday af- j ternoon at the home of Mrs. W. Gibbs, Jr. entertain ed members of her bridge club with a party at her home in Pleasant Gardens last Thursday evening. Tulips decorated the living room where two tables of contract were in play. Miss Marie Griffin won high score prize, Miss Margaret Honeycutt, second high, and Miss Marjorie Pless, low. The hostess served a sweet course. Others playing were Mrs. E. C.
