NORTH CAROLINA IS OBSERVING HOSPITAL WEEK Durham, April .'10.—North Caro lina's 122 general hospitals will rol: out the welcome mat to the public during North Carolina v Hospital Week, May 9 to 15. Reid Holmes, newly-installed pre sident of the North Carolina Hos pital Association, today announced plans for the special observance, which he said will be the most ex tensive in the state's history. "The public is cordially invited to visit the general hospitals in North Carolina during this week,': Holmes said. "The latch-string will be out and we hope that every cit izen who can will pay his local hos pital a call, and learn first-hand a bout the life-saving work which it is doing." Holmes said the theme of North Carolina Hospital Week this year will be "Serve Your Hospital—It Serves You." He pointed out thai North Carolina hospitals today are taking care of more patients than ever before. Practically all hospitals in the state are crowded, he said, and many are short of nurses, tech nicians, and other personnel. "The reason the hospitals are so crowded," Holmes explained, "is not that there are more sick people than there used to be, but because the average citizen today can afford medical care, despite the higher rates, whereas 10 years ago, he could not. The wdespread growth „of prepaid hospital coverage has been a big factor in this development, as has the general education of the public to the benefits of modern hospitalization and care. More and more the people have come to real ize that hospital is a center of com munity health—not just a last re sort in cases of serious illness or accident." Holmes appealed for stronger support of hospitals by the public. ■"There are many ways in which the people can help our hospitals to ren der better service," he said. "For example, by paying hospital bills promptly, and by practicing good manners when visiting hospital pa tients. These may seem like very in significant things, but actually they are extremely important."
