It pay3 Owls Defeat Marion By Score of 13-11 In a game that surged with dis : appointment for local baseball fans 1 the Marion Marauders went down in defeat at the hands of the Ru therford County Owls by a score of 13 to 11 in a two inning- affair last Thursday night. It looked .like an other Marion victory until the ninth when the Owls were able to drive in three runs to knot the score. Big Bill Burleson, a local left handed rookie, tossing the profes sional game of baseball of his life, allowed twelve hits; however, he kept them well scattered until the eighth. In this frame the Owls bunched four hits to bring in three runs to bring the score—Marion 10, Owls 7. The first two men to face Burleson in the fateful ninth doub led to edge the score one point near-< er a tie. At this point Skipper Lan I ning sent in McKee to relieve the [tiring southpaw. Dixon, lanky outfielder, was the first man to face McKee, but he promptly connected with *the first pitched ball for a home run and an f>xtra RBI to deadlock the score at 10 all. Visiting supporters of the Rutherford County outfit rocked the stand as the inning was closed with the Marauders being unable to produce in theiv half. As the big tenth came up the Owls continued their hitting ways. The first man up w as out on a fly to center field. The next man walk ed while the third man at Ivst singl ed. Dean Padgett, a Marion boy with a Chicago Cub contract and farmed to the K. 0. Owls, came to the plate with one away and two mates abroad, he cocked his hat, picked out a fast one and slugged a homer to put the game on ice for the visitors. Johnny Lanning's boys made a desperate effort to regain the lead in their half of the extra inning, but without success. It is tough to lose a game after leading all the way until the final time at bat. The line score: Owls 002 010 133 3-13 16 4 Marion — 400 023 100 1-11 13 0 Batteries: Owls—.Carlson, Kelly (7) Gaddy (8) to Enloe; Marion— Burleson, McKee (9) to Bonetti. I sometimes think it would not be a bad idea for schools to teach sociability and cour tesy to their pupils along with the reading and writing and 'rithmetic. We all know capable men and wo men who are honest and dependable, but who never seem to get the breaks when it comes to promotion. There are others who, while lacking in these virtues, seem to go swim mingly along until they reach the top. In almost every case you will find that this latter class are men and women whom people like personally. They are cordial and friendly but their best trait is in keeping off other folks' toes. I They positively do not belong to the class who pride themselves on be ing frank and telling others exactly what they think. And we cannot call them hypocrites. They are, however, great believers in tact. If they fail to agree with their companions on some questions, rather than have a row they discuss other subjects instead. They have never asked their friends why they buy such. unbecoming clothes, or infer that they are spend ing too much money on their new house or cars. They realize that such things are not their affairs and po litely let them alone. After all tact is really only a form of courtesies. If we teach our chil dren to be kind, to never offend other people unless it be a ques tion of morals or character, we need not worry about their getting on with other folks. Yours, LOUISA.
