Annual Piano Recitals
Presented Friday And Monday
Mrs. John A. Poteat and Mrs. Carl
W. McMurray presented their pu
pils in the annual recitals Friday
and Monday evenings climaxing the
year's work. Both events ■ivere held
in the high school auditorium.
On Friday evening members of
the Crosby Adams Juvenile club
gave a program of piano solos and
duets. Two original compositions
■were interesting features. Anne Mc
intosh played "Springtime" which
she composed for the occasion.
B-Linda Finley played her descrip
tive piece, "Sambo's Jalopy". Other
members appearing on the program
were Alfred Richie, Mary Mcintosh,
Lillian Twitty, Nona Burnette, Judy
Finley Ellen Twitty, Jane Mcintosh,
June Story, Martha Twitty, Man
garet Anne Pyatt, Carolyn McBee,
Walker Blanton and Doris Wilson.
Members of the Junior club were
presented Monday evening in a
program made up of piano and vo
cal numbers. During this recital a
Superior rating certificate was pre
sented to Jimmy Laughridge by the
retiring State Junior Counselor,
Mrs. McMurray. Jimmy won this
distinction at the recent District Ju
nior Festival held in Asheville.
This is the second consecutive
year Jimmy has won highest rating.
To mark the occasion he was award
ed gifts by his teacher,. Mrs. Poteat
and Mrs. McMurray. Mary Lou Bea
man received a gold certificate as
an award for superior rating for
three consecutive years. She was
given a McDowell pin by her teach
er, Mrs. McMurray.
Eight members who participated
in the first State Junior Choir Fes
tival in North Carolina, held in
Asheville, May 14, 1949, sang the
the Collect of the Junior Division of
the National Federation of Music
clubs and three sacred songs. The
last of this group was "The Lord
Bless You and Keep You" a bene
diction by Lutkin which closed the
recital. Those singing in the choir
were Pollyanna Atkins, Mary Lou<
Beaman, Roxanne Dark, Barbara
Fisher, Laura Jean Keeter, Margar
et McLarty, Patsy Teague and Pat
sy Watkins.
They were accompanied at the
piano by Mrs. McMurray. Others
who performed were Catherine
Long, Virginia McBee, Hope Mc
Call, Jimmy Laughridge and Mar
tha Steppe. One member of the
club, Mary Allen Poteat, was unable
to be present due to a recent acci
dent.
Stage decorations for the two
events were arranged by Mrs. R. W.
Twitty. Mrs. T. L. Richie, Mrs. Paul
Story, Mrs. Donald Mcintosh, Jr.,
Mrs. B. H. Laughridge, Mrs. Eugene
Keeter and Mrs. Guy Steppe.

Mrs. Maude Gilkey was honored
with a surprise birthday party jpven
at her home Saturday afternoon by
her daughters, Mrs. Harry McCall
and Mrs. E. W. Parker, Jr.
Spring flowers were used in de
corating. The guests were enter
tained with games and contests.
The hostesses served Russian tea,
sandwiches, cake and candy.

At Spring Valley Farm
Mr. and Mrs. A. F. Hunt enter
tained relatives last Sunday at their
home, "Spring Valley Farm" in
Glenwood. A delicious picnic dinner
was served on the lawn.
Those present for the enjoyable

and Mrs. A. G. Greene and children

her bridge club at her home on East
Court street last Thursday after
noon.
Roses and other seasonal flowers
formed a pretty background for the

course.

a bridge-tournament in the commu
nity building Monday evening.

Mrs. E. P. Dameron entertained
grammar grade teachers of the Ma
rion Central School with an infor
mal tea at her home Thursday af
ternoon.
The home was beautifully decorat
ed with arrangements of pink flow
ers.
The dining table was centered
with a crystal bowl of pink sweet
peas flanked by pink candles in
crystal holders. Mrs. Ralph Morris
assisted the hostess in serving sher
bet, sandwiches, tea and cake.

tion at her home on Crescent Drive
Wednesday afternoon of last week.

sided.
Opening formalities were lead by
Miss Bonnie Hill and Mrs. W. R.
Chambers. Mrs. B. F. Pollard con
ducted a ^evotional.
It was announced that Mrs. Carl
McMurray had been appointed State
chairman for the Advancement of
American Music by Miss Virginia

Mrs. A. C. Hewitt, Sr., Chapter
Historian, was in charge of the pro
gram.
Mrs. Hewitt presented the win
ners in the Essay Contest that was
recently conducted in the City
schools. The subject for these essays
using the history of North Carolina.
Miss Mary Lou Beaman winner from
Marion City school presented her
essay "The Great Seal of North Car
olina." From the Eugene Cross
school Miss Reba Harris was the
winner with an essay "The Lost Col
ony." From West Marion Miss Elaine
Cook was the winner with an essay
"The Story of Andrew Jackson."
From the East Marion school Miss
Katherine Long was the winner with
an essay "History of the Flag of
North Carolina."
The ebove medals were given re
spectively by Mrs. James E. Evans,
Mrs. Eugene Cross, Sr., Mrs. J. F.
Jonas and Mrs. R. J. Noyes. These
awards will be presented at the final
exercises of the school
After adjournment, the hostess
served a dessert course.

Wilsons Celebrate
25th Anniversary
Of Their Wedding
Mr. and Mrs. Watson Wilson en
tertained with open house last Fri
day night at their home in Nebo
celebrating their 25th wedding anni
versary.
The home was decorated with ros
es, sweet peas, daisies and laurel.
The dining table was covered with
a white linen cloth and centered
with a three-tiered wedding cake
flanked by burning tapers in silver
holders.
Mrs. Wilson cut the cake and her
daughter, Miss Virginia Lee Wil
son, presided over the punch bowl.
Mints and nuts were also served.
A color note of green and white was
carried out.
Twenty guests called during the
evening. The honorees received
many lovely gifts.
Naval Reservists
Have Meeting
A regular meeting of the Naval
Reservists Composite Unit of Mc
Dowell County was held in the court
house last Wednesday evening.
Business of a routine nature was
transacted and a training film was
shown.
Meetings are held 'the second and
fourth Wednesday nights in each
month.

Davidson, May 30—A Davidson

graduated at the college's 113th
Commencement Exercises held this
morning.
Ralph R. Alexander, Jr., son of

street, received the degree of Bach

Business and Economics. Active in
extracurricular affairs, he belonged
