Social News Mrs. Clyde Cannon, Editor Phone 434-M Two District Officers Speak To Local 0. E. S. Mrs. J. M. Mackey, District De puty Grand Matron of the 19th Dis trict North Carolina 0. E. S. and George Robertson, D. D. G. P. made theft* official visit to Marion Chap ter No. 278 at a meeting 'held in the Masonic hall Thursday evening. Mrs. Mackey praised the lpcal Chapter for its splendid work and announced that the chapter was a Gold Star Chapter last year. She enlarged on the requirements, laid down ^>y the Grand Chapter, that must be met this year to again at tain the rating of a Gold Star. In concluding her speech Mrs. Mackey brought an inspiring message to all Eastern Stai-s for the coming year. Robertson was also very compli mentary toward the Chapters' work and he too spoke on lines pertaining to Eastern Star work and empha sized the goals set by the Grand Chapter to be reached in the com» ing year. Preceeding the District Officers speeches Mrs. Landis Laughridge, Worthy Matron, presided over a routine business session with D. Pat Davis, Worthy Patron, pro tem as sisting her. Following the meeting a humor ous ceremony honoring Mrs. Mack ey, Robertson, and Ariehbald Pat terson was performed by the offi cers of the Chapter. The D. D. G. M. and Patron were remembered with gifts and a social hour follow ed with refreshments ,of dainty sandwiches, cookies, nuts and punch being served under the di rection of Mrs. W. S. Shiflet, chair man of the social committee. Visitors to the meeting included Archibald Patterson, of Spindale, Past Grand Patron of the Province of Quebec, 0. E. S., Mrs. Francis Roughton, Allie Steppe, Worthy Matron and Patron of Old Fort Chapter No. 175 and several East ern Star Members from Old Fort. o Mrs. H. G. Sain iHonored With Dinner Mrs. H. G. Sain was honored with a birthday dinner last Sunday at her home by her sister Mrs. Da vid Dellinger, of Cherryville. Mrs. Dellinger with 24 other rel atives of Mrs. Sain from Cherry ville arrived at noon with food pre pared for a buffet dinner. S. Shiflet was hostess with a dessert bridge party at her home last Friday evening, honoring Mrs. Carl Stokes, a recent bride. The guests were served a delic-1 ious dessert course on daintily ap-! pointed tables, with a profusion of mixed fall flowers forming a lovely background for the party. The hos tess was assisted in serving by her daughter, Mrs. M. S. Laughridge,1 Jr., and her sister Mrs. Julia Stan ley. Bridge was played progressional ly and at the close of play Mrs. Ber nard Hirsch was awarded high i score prize with second high going , to Miss Bonnie Hill. Miss Griffin Feted At McLarty Home Mrs. James B. McLarty enter tained with a party and a kitchen shower at her home last Saturday afternoon, to honor Miss Marie Griffin, bride elect of November 24. The house was decorated for the occasion with outstanding arrange ments of Autumn flowers being us ed in the living and dining rooms j and in the hall. The bridal motif was carried out by an arrangement of a miniature bride and groom on the hall table. Each guest arrived with a recipe to share with the bride elect and during the course of the party j these recipes were illustrated by j the donor and placed in a cook book i along with clever rhymes about the j recipes. - I Several games and contests werej enjoyed and a prize was awarded Mrs. Eugene Cross, Sr., for the! most interesting story of how she! met her husband. Miss Griffin was presented a corsage of kitchen utensils and after being blindfolded was led down an improvised isle over an obstacle course by Mrs. Ev erett Carries who was her "matron of honor." At the end of the isle Miss Griffin found, on removing her blindfold, many lovely and useful kitchen gifts, given her by the guests. Following the presentation of gifts the hostess served an ice course with coffee, assisted by her daughter, Miss Margaret McLarty and Miss Mary Lou Beaman, who also assisted with the games. Bride Elect Honored By Mrs. Laughridge Miss Marie Griffin, bride elect, was beautifully complimented by Mrs. M. S. Laughridge, Jr., at her home last Thursday evening with a dessert bridge party. The home was decorated for the party with fall flowers in various arrangements being used through out the rooms. Following the set*ving of a des sert course five tables of bridge were in play. Noyes last Friday afternoon at the Noyes home on View Point Drive. Arrangements of mixed fall flow ers were used to decorate for the party. Guests arrived at one o'clock and were served a two course lun-' cheon prior to the playing of bridge at two tables. At the count of scores Mrs. Ralph Alexander was winner of high score | for club members and Miss Annie J Laurie Blanton, Mrs. T. L. Richie, prize for the visitors. Twitty. o ATTEND MEETING Miss Elsie Garrett, county home demonstration and Miss Ruby Lea Kiser, assistant agent, will attend a meeting of the North Carolina Home Economics association in Winston-Salem Friday of this week. o Among those attending the Caro lina-Tennessee football game at I Chapel Hill last Saturday were: Mr. and Mrs. M. Will Pless, Jr., and Mr. and Mrs. R. W. Proctor. Miss Clark Wedded ToPaulO.Thomason Miss Irene Clark and Mr. Paul 0. Thompson, were wed by the Rever end Dr. Embree H. Blackard in the Church Chapel of the Central Meth odist Church, Asheville, on October 29. Mrs. Thompson is a native of Mooresville, North Carolina. She is a member of the Public Health Nur sing staff of the Henderson-Tran sylvania Health District, and was formerly a member of the McDowell Health Unit. The bridegroom is a native of Old Fort and is engaged in the business of farming. o Mrs. Britt Receives Honorary Membership At a regular business meeting of the Marion Junior Woman's club last Tuesday evening, in the club room of the community building, Mrs. Wade Britt, third vice presi dent, in charge of Juniors, of the North Carolina Federated Womens Clubs, was made an honorary mem ber of the local club. This honor was conferred on Mrs. Britt in recognition of the outstanding work rendered the club and the entire community through her ef forts in club work. Mrs. P. T. Hollis, president, pre sided over the business session dur ing which various committee re ports were heard. Mrs. Thomas Gibson, treasurer of the Teen Age club gave a grati fying report on the financial stand ing of the club. Mrs. M. S. Laugh ridge, Jr., chairman of the Chil dren's Home Drive reported a bal ance of $150.00 raised in this drive and stated that donations will still be gladly accepted. Mrs. Jack Ballew accepted the chairmanship of the Welfare com mittee to succeed Mrs. Joseph King Stanley who resigned from that ca pacity. Mrs. Landis Laughridge gave a report on the North Carolina Club Woman in which an article by Mrs. Wade Brit.t appeared and also a re port of the local clubs first meet ing of the year. Mrs. Edna Earle Stancill, chair man of the T. B. Seal Sale announc ed that Christmas Seals will go out November 21. Mrs. Hollis read the club the requirements, laid down by the North Carolina Federated Clubs, which must be met in order to become a 100 per cent club. Mrs, Richard Perkins, chairman of the Point System reported on the standings of the members in having the required number of points up to this date. Mrs. Phillip Laughridge, parlia menterian gave a brief report on the first of three articles prepared by Mrs. Britt for the Juniors of the State concerning the Point System. Following the report Mrs. Laugh ridge instructed the new members of the club on the requirements to be met under the Point System of the Constitution of the Marion club. Episcopal Women To Have Spaghetti Dinner November 17 The Woman's Auxiliary of St. John's Episcopal church will spon sor its annual spaghetti supper at 2 p. m., Thursday, November 17, in the community building. There will also be an apron sale. Tickets are on sale at The Mar guerite Shoppe and the McDowell Cut Rate Drug Store. Hall Aboard USS Sabine Kenneth R. Hall, seaman, USN of Cross Mill, Marion, as a crew member aboard the fleet oiler USS Sabine now taking part in joint Navy and Marine Corps cold weath er exercises off the coast of labra dor in the vicinity of Hamilton In let.
