Social News Mrs. Clyde Cannon, Editor Phone 434-M Bride Elect Feted At Eckerd Home One of the loveliest courtesies paid Miss Marie Griffin bride elect, was a party given by Mrs. Vernon Eckerd, Miss Doris Nunn and Miss Margaret Honeycutt at the Eckerd home on Rutherford Road last Wednesday evening. Guests were invited for seven o'clock and upon arrival found a home lovely with arrangements of fall flowers following a color scheme of pink and white. Individual tables set up in the dining room were festive with small baskets of white pom pom chrysan themums centering - them and cov ers laid for the serving of a delic ious two course dinner. The place of the bride elect was marked with a nosegay corsage of white roses and small pom pom chrysanthe mums, tied with white satin ribbon. Following dinner, bridge was in play and when scores were tallied, on bridal tallies, Mrs. William Con ley was winner of high score prize and Miss Marie Griffin was award ed second high score prize. Miss Wilma Snoddy won the Bingo prize and the hostesses also remembered Miss Griffin with a beautiful anti que wall plate and Mrs. William Conley and Mrs. Carl Stokes, re cent brides, with bridal gifts. Guests for the evening included: Mrs. Griffin, Mrs. Conley, Mrs. Stokes, Miss Snoddy, Mrs. Thomas Gibson, Mrs. W. B. Laughridge, Jr. u Bride, Bride Elect Honored Saturday A lovely luncheon was given in the private dining room at the Sun set Restaurant last Saturday with Miss Mary Frances Harrill as hos tess, to honor Mrs. William T. Con ley, bride of the summer, and Miss! Marie Griffin, bride elect. Guests were invited for one o'clock and arrived to find tables beautifully appointed with decora tions carrying out the bridal motif and covers laid for 10 guests. Ar rangements of white flowers were ■used and the place cards were dec orated with miniature scales of wedding music. Miss Harrill presented Mrs. Con ley with a beautiful Williamsburg print and remembered Miss Griffin with a gift of crystal in her chosen pattern. F. Miller entertained with a party at her home last Wednes day to honor members of her bridge club and three visitors. The home was decorated with a profusion of mixed fall flowers and blue Agaratum. A dessert course was served on individual tables and afterwards a bridge game was en joyed at two tables. At the close of play Mrs. J. C. Rabb was awarded high score bridge prize with second high go ing to Mrs. R. K. Davis. Club members playing bridge were: Mrs. J. C. Rabb, Mrs. R. K. Davis, Mrs. J. 0. Laughridge, Mrs. Robert Lambeth, Mrs. W. S. Shiflet and Mrs. Miller. Visitors enjoying the game were Mrs. Horace Lance and Mrs. Arthur Allen. Mrs. Carr Bell was a visitor for refreshments and assisted the hostess with the party. o Virginia Mae Jolley Honored With Party Little Miss Virginia Mae Jolley was guest of honor at a delightful party given by her mother Mrs. J. T. Jolley last Wednesday afternoon to celebrate the occasion of her third birthday. j The guests arrived at four o'clock and presented Virginia Mae with a variety of lovely gifts. Games and toys entertained the guests and pictures were taken by the hostess throughout the party. Pollyana Atkins Has Party Wednesday I Thirty members of the young set were delightfully entertained last Wednesday evening when Miss Pollyanna Atkins celebrated her sixteenth birthday with a pai-ty at her home on Rutherford Road. The party began with a Scavan ger hunt and a number of humer ious articles were collected by the contestants. , Returning to the home the guests1 were entertained by dancing, and games including Bingo. Eight priz es were awarded during the Bingo games. Following the games the honoree opened the many lovely gifts pre sented her by the guests and re-! freshments of birthday cake, ice cream, nuts and Coca-Cola were served by Miss Atkins, Mrs. L. D. Atkins, Sr., and Mrs. L. D. Atkins, Bridge Club Meets With Mrs. Clyde Bobo On last Wednesday evening Mrs. Clyde Bobo entertained with a des sert bridge at her home in the Ja mes apartments for members of her bridge club and a visitor to the party. Fall flowers were tastefully us ed for decorating and formed a lovely setting for the serving of a dessert course prior to the bridge game enjoyed at fryvo tables. i At the count of scores Mrs. Ar cfoie Mcintosh was awarded high ^core prize and low score prize was presented Mrs. E. W. Ramsey at tended the Southeastern Industrial Vision Congress held at the Gorgian : Institute of Technology in Atlanta, Georgia last Sunday and Monday. I This is the annual meeting of the industrial and the eye professions. Dr. Ramsey is president of the North Carolina Optometric Society. Bride Elect Feted By Joint Hostesses Mrs. Pete Gibbs and Mrs. Tho mas Gibson were joint hostesses with a bridge party last Thursday evening at the Gibbs home on Lake Tahoma Road to compliment Miss Marie Griffin, bride elect of this month. For the party the home was love ly with arrangements of colorful fall flowers and the bridal motif was carried out in tally cards and appointments used for serving a salad course preceeding the bridge games. Miss Griffins place at the refreshment table was marked with a corsage of tiny white chrysanthe mums. Following the bridge progressions Miss Doris Nunn was awarded high j score prize, second high was award ed Miss Elizabeth Seagle and low score prize went to Mrs. M. S. Laughridge, Jr. Miss Griffin was remembered with honor gifts from each of the hostesses. The small guests were entertain ed at the Britt Apartment in Hotel James with various games prior to attending the Abbott arid Costello #novie at the Marion Theatre. A color scheme of green and yel low was used in decorating and in the refreshments of birthday cake, ice cream and accessories. The young honoree was remem bered with an array of gifts from the following guests: Jenny Gray, Amanda Allen, Peggy Perkins, Jane Hollis, Sallie Hitchcock, Rebecca Atkins, Martha Pyatt, Patricia Hewitt, Martha Mauney, John Mor ris, Johnny Streetman, Barry Ram sey, Paul Story, Jr., and Dickie Smith, and Rachael Hewitt. Mrs. Britt was assisted with the party by Mis. P. T. Hollis and Mrs. W. H. Britt, Sr., of Hendersonville, grandmother of the honoree. o Miss Griffin Feted At McCall Home Friday afternoon of last week Mrs. George McCall and Mrs. Ern est Gore entertained for Miss Marie Griffin, bride-elect, at a seated tea. The rooms were attractively decoll ated with fall flowers, and a color scheme of green and white was ef fectively carried out in decorations and refreshments. Guests arrived at 4 p. m. and were served ice cream in individual molds, cake and coffee; also at tractive tiny baskets filled with nuts and candy, the baskets being souvenirs. Mrs. Wilfred G. Best as sisted the hostess in serving. Sara Morris, well known laun dress, came in with a clothes basket filled with erifts, and said "Miss Marie, here's your laundry." The "laundry" consisted of numerous and beautiful gifts of linen. Shiflet. o 100 Attend Banquet On Monday Evening Approximately 100 women of the Womans Society of Christian Ser vice and the Wesleyan Service Guild of First Methodist church at tended the anuual banquet of the two groups held in the community building Monday evening. Mrs. Rowe Mauney. president of the W. S. C. S. welcomed the guests and the invocation was given by Rev. James B. McLarty. Mrs. Ingram Holland gave a hum orous recitation entitled "The Church Organ" and several Negro spirituals were rendered by singers from Addie's Chapel church. Clay, wife of a returned missionary from Brazil, who was introduced by Mrs. John Hoyle, Jr. Garden Club Meets At McCall Home The Mar: an Garden Club met at the home of Mrs. W. A. McCall on Rutherfordton Road Tuesday af ternoon, November 8, with Mrs. Gordon Morris and Mrs. J. L. Gour ley, Sr., as co-hostesses. Autumn flowers in colorful ar rangements and potted plants were used to effectively decorate for the meeting. The business session was presid ed over by Mrs. R. E. McCall, pre sident, and the opening poem was read by the Chaplain, Mrs. John Hoyle, Jr. 21 members answered ! roll call by giving helpful sugges tions for the care of shrubbery. A letter was read from Mrs. E. B. Pittman. of Wilson, N. C., Pil grimage chairman, stating the plans for a tour of the North Car olina Garden clubs to begin in the early Spring of 1950. Mrs. Pittman wrote that a great many points of interest and beauty will be visited and that Western North Carolina with its many points of unsurpass ed beauty should be given a good ly amount of time. Mrs. R. I. Corbett received some interesting facte about Marion's flower, the rose, and Mrs. A. C. Hewitt, Jr., gave an article on the effect of harmones used in the i rooting of soft woods. Mrs. J. H. i Greene discussed the growing of j hardwoods from cuttings, after | which Mrs. W. S. Shiflet gave a list | of native shrubs that may be used' successfully in this locality. The club voted to remember! shut-ins and members of the Home i for the Aged during the Christmas I season. During the social hour a game was enjoyed concerning the names of shrubbery with Mrs. M. W. Gor don winner. Seasonable arrange ments of flowers were displayed by Mrs. J. B. McLarty and Mrs. Annie Miller Pless and blue ribbons were awarded for both arrangements. Mrs. W. S. Shiflet discussed ar rangements of shrubs without flow ers after which the hostess served delicious refreshments consisting of a salad and sweet course with ac cessories and tea. Cross House Scene Of Party Wednesday The home of Mrs. S. R. Cross on Airport Road wa? the scene of a lovely party last Wednesday when Mrs. Cross was hostess with a luncheon and bridge party for members of her bridge club. The rooms were lovely with a variety of chrysanthemums being used in outstanding- arrangements to decorate. Following a delicious luncheon at one o'clock the club enjoyed bridge at two tables with Mrs. Sam Yan cey beine the winner of high score prize and Mrs. Neal Morris receiv ing second high.
