Social News Mrs. Clyde Cannon, Editor Phone 434-M Griffin, Snoddy Wedding Plans Announced Today Miss Marie Griffin, whose marri age to John Martin Snoddy, Jr., will be solemnized next week, has announced her wedding plans as follows: The wedding will take place at 5 o'clock Thursday afternoon, No vember 24 at the First Methodist church with Reverend James B. Mc Larty, pastor, officiating. The voc alist will be Mrs. William T. Conley of Marion. The organist will be Mrs. Ernest Gore of Marion. Dr. Karl C. Jones, of Philadel phia, will give his sister in marri age. Mrs. Karl Jonas will serve as matron of honor and the bride elect has chosen as maid of honor her cousin Miss Catherine Long of Oceania, Virginia and Valdese. Dr. Warren Snoddy of Greer. S. C., cou sin of the bridegroom elect will serve as best man and little Miss Dial Elliott of Baltimore, Maryland niece of the groom elect, will be flower girl. Ushers will be John Jonas, of Philadelphia, brother of the bride elect, J. T. Ross, of Asheville, bro ther-in-law of the groom elect, Marcus and Sam Snoddy, of Rock ingham, cousins of the groom elect, Thomas Hodnett of Raleigh and David Black of Charlotte. A number of courtesies have been paid the bride elect and others are planned1 as follows: On Wednesday evening Novem ber 23, Mrs. R. I. Corbett and Mrs. W. A. McCall will be hostesses with a formal dinner party at the Cor bett home, honoring the wedding party and immediate families of the bride and groom elect. The wed ding rehearsal will follow the party. After the rehearsal Dr. and Mrs. Karl C. Jonas and John Jonas will entertain with a cake cutting at the Jonas home on North Garden street. On Thursday a wedding break fast will be held at high noon at the home of Mrs. J. H. Beaman when Mrs. Beaman and Mrs. Mil dred Shore and Mi's. C. C. Long, of Valdese, aunts of the bride elect entertain for the wedding party. On Thanksgiving morning, John Snoddy, Jr., will entertain with a breakfast at 9:30 o'clock, at his home on Rutherford road, for the ushers of the wedding party. Bridge Party Given By Mrs. Baughman Mrs. John Baughman of More-, land, Kentucky, was hostess with a' dessert bridge party at the home ofj Mr. and Mrs. J. C. Rabb on Lake Tahoma road last Friday evening. Mixed fall flowers and potted plants were used for decorating and formed a pretty setting for the bridge tables appointed for serving a delicious dessert course prior to the bridge games. Mrs. .T. 0. Rabb assisted Mrs. Baughman in serving. After several progressions of bridge were enjoyed and score were tallied Mrs. James Curtis Akers of i Stuart Virginia, was winner of i high score prize with second high ; being awarded Mrs. Albert Gray i son. ^ The guest list included Mrs. Grayson, Mrs. Akers, Mrs. Clarence I Rabb, Miss Elizabeth Whitten, Mrs. I Bruce Gibbs, Miss Elizabeth Chap ; man, and Mrs. Harold Chapman, of ; Silver Springs, Maryland. o Bride Elect Honored By Hostesses Friday | Miss Marie Griffin, whose mar riage to John Martin Snoddy, Jr., will take place November 24, was I beautifully complimented last Fri day evening at the Marion Lake club when Mrs. William T. Conley and Miss Wilma Snoddy entertain i ed in her honor with a dinner bridge party. ! The main club room was decor ated for the occasion with lovely | arrangements of white chrysanthe mums carrying out the bridal mo tif. Individual tables were set up 1 and appointed for the serving of a two course dinner. The tables were centered with small arrangements of white flowers and the bride elects,place was marKea witn a cor sage of white pom pom chrysanthe mums. Following the dinner, seven tab les of bridge were in play with the tally cards also suggesting the brid al motif. At the count of scores Miss Doris Hill received high score bridge prize with second high go ing to Miss Elise Van Landingham. The hostesses also remembered Miss Griffin with an appropriate honor gift. Among the guests for the even ing was Mrs. Harvey Jonas, of Lin colnton, mother of Mrs. Conley. o Hostesses Honor Benita Dameron Miss Benita Dameron was honor ed on the occasion of her 13th birthday by Mrs. Virgil Bradburn and Miss Virginia Young who en tertained for her with a surprise party at the Bradburn home last Thursday evening. | The home was decorated for the party with arangements of chrysan themums. | Approximately 40 guests were i present and presented the honoree | with many lovely and useful gifts. Various games and contests were i enjoyed and several prizes award ed the contestants. J Refreshments of birthday cake, sandwiches, nuts and Coca-Cola were served, carrying out a color scheme of pink and blue. Mrs. W. M. Dameron assisted the hostesses in serving. —o ; Study Club Meets With Mrs. McCall | The Marion Study Clab met i Tuesday afternoon at the home of Mrs. W. A. McCall on Rutherford road with 13 members present. Roll call was answered by each member giving a few remarks on "My Thankfulness." Mrs. G. B. Finley, president, pre sided during the business meeting after which Mrs. R. I. Corbett gave J an excellent book review on "The Trembling Years," by Elsie Oakes Barber. Following the meeting the hos tess, assisted by Miss Frances Eng lish served a delicious plate supper. Miss Jean Maxwell was a guest to the meeting. o ATTEND CONVENTION • Mr. and Mrs. A. S. Bradford left Saturday to spend a week in De troit, Michigan where the former is attending a Coca-Cola convention, j Try a Progress want ad. Junior Womans Club Hears Mrs. Williams On Tuesday evening Mrs. Gar land Williams principal of the Cross Mill school for the past 28 years addressed members of the Marion Junior Womans clu)> on the subject of "Education." Mrs. Wil liams was introduced by Mrs. I. Haithcock, program chairman. In opening her speech Mrs. Wil liams spoke of the 2.5 billion dol lars spent on education in the Unit ed States last year and stated that 32 million children are now enroll ed in the schools of America. She read a speech made by Governor Aycock to the North Carolina Leg islature in 1900 and stated that the dream of Aycock was being fulfill ed. Mrs. Williams stressed the fact that the whole child must be edu cated ^physically, mentally and spir itually and illustrated her remarks by a humorous reading, from Read ers Digest, aboilt a small boys' idea of right from wrong. She quoted that "there are no juvenile delin quents. Behind every so-called de linquent is a parent or a teacher, or both, who have failed." She stat ed that "Education is absorbed," and closed her talk by reading the lovely poem by Walt Whitman "A Child Went Forth." Following Mrs. Williams' talk Mrs. P. T. Hollis, president presid ed over a business session. Mrs. Wade Britt, third vice president of the North Carolina Federation of Womans Club gave a resume of a talk delivered by her to the Junior Womans Club of Canton on Thurs day evening of last week. She spoke of her trip to New York City in October and in a most interest ing way told of the 18th Herald Tribune Forum held at the Wal dorf Astoria. She spoke of hearing such personalities as Margaret Chase Smith, Mrs. Blair Buck, Lu cious D. Clay, Franklin D. Roose velt, Jr., Dwight Eisenhour, Dr. Frank P. Graham, and Heury Ca bot Lodge. The keynote of the i'or um was "What Kind of Govern ment Ahead," and Mrs. Britt dis cussed topics chosen by the Demo crats and Republicans for the four evening sessions of the Forum. The club voted to sponsor again next year the Crippled Childrens Campaign with Mrs. J. G. Pyatt, Jr., as chairman. A vote was also made and carried to sponsor an ad in the High School Manual. Mrs. J. W. Streetman, Jr., chair man of the major projects commit tee announced that the guests at the Home for the Aged would be remembered in some way for Thanksgiving. Mrs. Edna Earle Stancill distributed T. B. seals to various club members to be prepar ed for mailing. Mrs. Haithcock announced that the next program meeting would be held Wednesday, December 16, in the form of a dinner meeting with talent from the club oeing used for entertainment. Refreshments were served at the close of the meeting by Mrs. Clyde Bobo, Mrs. J. L. Sullivan and Mrs. William T. Conley, hostesses. n Bridge Club Meets With Mrs. Hagna Mrs. L. W. Hagna entertained with a dessert bridge party at her home on North Main street last Thursday evening in honor of mem bers of her bridge club and one vis itor. Arrangements of roses were used to compliment the setting for indi vidual tables set up and appointed for the serving of a dessert course upon arrival of the guests. Following the bridge games Mrs. W. W.- Greene was awarded high score bridge prize with second high going to Mrs. G. B. Justice. Club members present included Mrs. W. W. Greene, Mrs. G. B. Jus tice, Mrs. B. A. bickson, Mrs. George Rowe, Mrs. R. W. Twitty, Mrs. T. L. Richie and Mrs. D. N. Lonon, Mrs. E. P. Dameron was a visitor to the club for the party. Homecoming Dance At High School Last Friday Night Students of Marion High School held their annual Homecoming dance after the football game with Canton Friday night. A pep meet ing and parade preceeded the game.i After the game, former gradu ates, students and visitors from Canton were invited to the gym, which had been beautifully decorat ed in the school colors of both Marion and Canton. Guests were greeted at the door by a welcoming committee compos ed of Marion students. Square and round dancing was enjoyed and sponsors for both teams and their escorts were presented. Punch, sandwiches and cookies were served throughout the eve ning by the mothers of -the High School grade representatives of the P. T. A., who arrange these dances at regular intervals during the school year. \ This delightful event was enjoy ed by some 300 students, parents and friends of both schools. —-—o Church School Class Holds Regular Meet V'* ■ The Daughters of - the - Susanna Wesley church School Class of the First Methodist church met for a regular class meeting Wednesday of last week with 18 membei-s pre sent. Miss Mary Belle Blackburn, pre sident, presided during the business session and Mrs. D. R. Peeler led the worship service. Mrs. L. D. Atkins was elected as sistant secretary ana Mrs. Ida co lick assistant treasurer. Mrs. W. I. Haithcock accepted the office of chairman of Visitation. The class voted to sponsor a cake and pie sale November 23 for the purpose of making money to contribute to the Methodist Educational Building fund.,The sale will be conducted at Smith Furniture Company under the direction of Mrs. J. S. Wilson. A social hour, honoring mothers of the class members and adopted mo thers was planned for December 7 with Mrs. C. H^irry McCall as chair man. Mrs. W. D. Haithcoek, hostess for the evening served cookies, coffee and nuts assisted by Miss Black burn. o Mrs. Dysart Wedded To Harry S. Reish Mrs. Frank S. Dysart, sister-in law of Mrs. Louise Barnes and Mrs. M. W. Pryor of Marion, became the bride of Harry C. Reish on Sun day, November 6, at the First Pres byterian church in Bend, Oregon, according to word received here last week. They will make their home in Bend, Oregon. o Dr. and Mrs. George G. Ross have had as their guests for the past two weeks Mr. and Mrs. How ard T. Ross of Hampton Beach, New Hampshire.
